In April 2024, Julia Bonilla publicly defended Rudy Gobert after reporting on an anonymous NBA player survey named him the league’s most overrated player. Bonilla was described as Gobert’s partner at the time; in May 2025, Gobert confirmed they had separated.
Why Julia Bonilla defended Rudy Gobert
The criticism followed The Athletic’s anonymous player survey, which asked NBA players to name the league’s most overrated player. Reports published on April 22 and 23, 2024, said Gobert received the most selections. Bonilla responded on social media, objecting to the criticism and expressing pride in her partner.
TMZ reproduced Bonilla’s Instagram statement on April 22. She wrote: “My partner is the most dedicated, focused, hard-working person I have ever met.” She also said, “He hasn’t stolen anything from anyone and deserves all the respect for his determination and commitment to his career.” TMZ’s report is the source for these quoted words; the original Instagram post is not independently available here.
What Bonilla said about the criticism
Bonilla called the backlash “stupidity, disrespect and nonsense,” and said she was proud of Gobert. In the statement reproduced by TMZ, she described him as “fair, a great teammate, with a good heart and a strong mind.” Those are Bonilla’s assessments of his character and work ethic, not findings established by the poll.

How many players voted for Gobert?
Published accounts give different figures for the survey. The discrepancy is unresolved in the available reports, so the numbers should not be combined or treated as a single confirmed count.

TMZ reports 11 votes out of 81 participants. A syndicated Sean Neumann report published by Yahoo Sports gives a different denominator—142 players—and says 13.6 percent chose Gobert. Neither report explains whether the difference reflects survey rounds, question responses, or an error. The original Athletic poll is not directly available in these reports.

Were Bonilla and Gobert still together?
The word “girlfriend” describes the relationship in the April 2024 story, not a verified current status. In May 2025, Gobert publicly confirmed that he and Bonilla were no longer in a relationship. E! News quoted him saying, “Julia and I are currently in the painful process of redefining our co-parenting relationship,” and asking people to refrain from speculation and respect their privacy. E! News reported his statement on May 17, 2025.
TMZ also reported on the separation and reproduced a statement from Bonilla saying she had chosen to protect Gobert’s name for their children. Its May 16, 2025 report includes claims attributed to unnamed sources; those claims are distinct from Gobert’s public confirmation that the relationship had ended.
