Spoilers through manga chapter 143. Yuta’s threat to kill Yuji initially sounds like revenge for injuring Inumaki in Shibuya. But that is the public explanation, not Yuta’s real plan: he accepted the execution assignment so he could make the authorities believe it had been carried out, then save Yuji.
Why Yuta is named Yuji’s executioner
In the aftermath of the Shibuya Incident, Jujutsu Headquarters resumes Yuji’s execution and appoints Yuta to carry it out. The appointment makes Yuta’s threat seem official as well as personal. The chapter 137 summary describes the renewed order and Yuta’s role.
What Yuta says in chapter 137
Yuta tells others that Yuji injured Inumaki during the Shibuya events and presents that as his reason for killing him. On first reading, Yuta appears to be acting out of loyalty and anger over what happened to his friend. That is the explanation he gives publicly, but it is not the full story.
What Yuta reveals in chapter 143
Manga spoilers through chapter 143: Yuta later explains that he made a binding vow to secure approval as Yuji’s executioner. The arrangement with Gojo was to satisfy the apparent order: Yuta would make the authorities believe Yuji had been killed, then use reverse cursed technique to bring him back. The chapter 143 summary describes this reveal.
