Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 22, “Pathway of Souls,” is where Maru’s plan to end cursed spirits becomes concrete. Rather than exorcising curses one at a time, he intends to reshape the souls of Japan’s human population so new cursed spirits can no longer be born in the usual way. The plan requires Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration—and Yuji defeats Mahito decisively before Maru turns him into part of the final operation.
This is a spoiler-filled retrospective explanation. Chapter 22 was officially released in English on February 15, 2026, and the complete 25-chapter series has since concluded.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 22, “Pathway of Souls,” is the chapter in which Maru’s plan stops being a theory and becomes an endgame operation. Instead of trying to exorcise cursed spirits one by one, Maru intends to change the soul structure of Japan’s human population so new cursed spirits can no longer be produced in the usual way. To do that, he needs Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration, Yuta Okkotsu’s cursed energy, the Naunax’s mul, and Yuki Tsukumo’s research on souls.
That premise makes Chapter 22 a conceptual turning point. The series moves from fighting the symptoms of the curse problem to rewriting the conditions that create it. It is also a spoiler-heavy Yuji–Mahito rematch, but not a conventional one: Yuji now defeats the former Shibuya antagonist with overwhelming ease and leaves Mahito to be repurposed as part of the harmonization process.

Chapter 22 spoilers: Maru needs Mahito for the harmonization plan
Maru restores Mahito to full strength because Mahito’s cursed technique is essential to the proposed harmonization. Idle Transfiguration allows Mahito to alter the shape of a person’s soul. That makes him uniquely suited to a plan that would affect the souls of Japan’s entire human population.
Yuji quickly understands the outline: Maru wants to combine Mahito’s soul-altering technique with the Naunax’s mul and Yuta Okkotsu’s cursed energy. The intended result is not simply a stronger attack or a large-scale barrier. It is a transformation of the human condition that produces cursed spirits.
Yuji’s immediate objection is practical. Can a process this extensive really be carried out? Maru says it can—provided Mahito cooperates. That qualification is the central problem. Mahito is too dangerous, selfish, and unpredictable to be trusted with a role in a plan meant to protect humanity.
The solution is to confront him in the “pathway of souls.” Within this space, Yuji and Maru retain physical forms while Mahito appears as a soul-based opponent. Maru explains that defeating Mahito there would not necessarily erase him. It would instead leave him in a condition where he could be used for the larger operation.

Yuji versus Mahito: the rematch ends before it begins
Mahito attacks first, turning the environment into a grotesque recreation of Shibuya. The setting itself becomes an extension of his technique: eel-like monsters and masses of debris close in on Yuji, transforming the battle into an attempt to crush him through the landscape rather than merely strike him directly.
Mahito then tries to escalate with his domain. The attack fails to produce the old power imbalance, however. Yuji emerges unharmed and cuts Mahito—and the surrounding terrain—into cubes. The scene is a decisive reversal of their original relationship.

Chapter 22 presents a Yuji who is no longer physically or psychologically dominated by him. The reported weakness taunt is therefore more than a power-scaling exchange. It marks Yuji’s changed position: Mahito still embodies an unbearable history, but he no longer controls the encounter.
Yuji’s victory is also deliberately uncomplicated. The chapter does not turn the rematch into a second extended duel or suggest that Mahito has suddenly become an equal. Its function is to show that the former defining threat has been reduced to a component in someone else’s plan.
What happens to Mahito?
After Yuji defeats him, Maru gathers Mahito’s remains and converts them into sparkling particles. He later reduces Mahito to a plush-doll-like component of the harmonization setup. The image is grotesque precisely because it strips Mahito of the imposing identity he once possessed.
Yuji worries that Mahito may have damaged the souls of his dead friends. Maru reassures him that souls cannot interfere with one another in that way inside the pathway. Maru also explains that Mahito’s temporary restoration was caused by the influence of the Harmony technique; it was not a permanent return to his former state.

That distinction matters. Chapter 22 is not presenting Mahito as resurrected in the ordinary sense. He has been temporarily restored because his technique is needed, then subdued and converted into a usable element of the ritual.
Why Mahito is the key to ending cursed spirits
Mahito’s inclusion is thematically cruel and technically logical. His Idle Transfiguration directly alters the soul, while Maru’s objective is to change the way human souls interact with cursed energy. The technique that made Mahito such a destructive antagonist could therefore become the mechanism for preventing the next generation of cursed spirits.
Chapter 22 does not claim that defeating Mahito alone ends curses. The plan requires several separate components:
- Mahito: the source of the soul-altering technique needed for the transformation.
- Yuki Tsukumo’s notebook: research concerning the nature and structure of souls.
- Yuta’s ring: a source or conduit connected to Yuta’s cursed energy.
- Fragments of mul: the Naunax component Maru believes is necessary for harmonization.
- Yuji’s knowledge: an explanation of how cursed spirits are generated in the first place.
Maru asks Yuji to explain the curse system. Yuji describes cursed spirits as beings born when cursed energy leaks from humans. He also explains that this phenomenon is concentrated primarily in Japan. The proposed operation consequently targets the source population rather than treating each resulting curse as an isolated enemy.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe chapter’s central idea: prevention instead of exorcism
The usual jujutsu solution is reactive. A cursed spirit appears, sorcerers locate it, and someone attempts to exorcise it. Even a successful exorcism does not necessarily prevent the next curse from forming, because the human leakage of cursed energy continues.
Maru’s plan attacks that cycle at its origin. If the souls of Japan’s people can be harmonized so they no longer generate cursed spirits in the normal way, the need for endless exorcism could disappear. In practical terms, this is a systems-level solution to a supernatural problem.
That does not make the plan automatically safe or morally uncomplicated. Chapter 22 establishes the intended outcome, not a complete proof that the process will work without consequences. Altering the souls of an entire population is an enormous intervention, and the chapter’s need for Mahito’s cooperation highlights how dangerous the method is. The tension comes from the contrast between the desirable goal—ending the birth of cursed spirits—and the frightening means required to reach it.
How Chapter 22 fits the ending of Modulo
Chapter 22 ends with Maru having assembled the components he believes are necessary. It is therefore a setup chapter for the final ritual rather than a self-contained resolution. Chapter 23 is titled “Ritual of Harmony,” which directly follows from the preparation completed here.

The series ultimately concluded with Chapter 25 on March 8, 2026. Chapter 22 belongs to the late material collected in the third and final Japanese volume. Shueisha’s description of that volume places it around the confrontation involving Dabura, Mahoraga, Yuka, Maru, and Yuji’s appearance.
For readers collecting the late-series material, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Volume 3 is the relevant final Japanese collection. It should be identified as a Japanese import where a marketplace listing is not an English edition. The Japanese Volume 3 was released on May 1, 2026. VIZ’s English-language Volume 1 is planned for Spring 2027, so an English print edition should not be described as already available as of August 11, 2026.

The safest reading destination is the VIZ/Shonen Jump listing for Chapter 22. VIZ identifies the official English chapter record and points readers toward MANGA Plus for free access to the latest chapters in supported regions.
Readers should avoid leaked scans, raw pages, and unauthorized translations. Besides raising rights concerns, those sources can use inconsistent title translations and unreliable release dates. For this chapter, the official VIZ date takes priority over secondary reports, while the Japanese listing is useful for confirming the Japanese publication date and page count.

Final explanation
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 22 is important because it changes the question at the heart of the story. The characters are no longer asking how to defeat the next cursed spirit. They are asking whether the human soul can be changed so cursed spirits stop being born at all.
Best Value

- It can be used as a gift
Mahito is the horrifying embodiment of that idea: his technique can reshape souls, and the chapter turns him from Yuji’s nemesis into the raw material of the proposed cure. Yuji’s effortless victory closes one of their oldest conflicts, while Maru’s assembled components propel the series directly into its final ritual. The chapter does not end the curse system by itself, but it establishes the mechanism and stakes for the ending that follows.
