Spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 21, “The Awaited One Arrives.” The chapter is already published, and its biggest development is not the literal awakening or return of Toji Fushiguro. Instead, Tsurugi Okkotsu proves why readers compare him with Toji and Maki, while making a choice that transforms the fight with Maru from a simple battle into a question of coexistence, grief, and whether cursed energy can be eliminated.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 21 is officially titled 待ち人来る, commonly rendered in English as “The Awaited One Arrives.” The chapter is sometimes described through the headline “The New Toji Fushiguro Awakens,” but that wording should not be taken literally: Toji does not appear, resurrect, or awaken in this chapter. The Toji connection comes from Tsurugi’s physically gifted lineage and his relationship with Maki.
The chapter’s actual cliffhanger is much larger. Maru brings Yuji Itadori into a plan intended to create a world without newly born cursed spirits, and the two enter a soul passageway where Mahito has been waiting for Yuji. At the same time, Dabura unveils a Domain Expansion while fighting Mahoraga.
When was Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 21 released?
For English-language readers, VIZ lists Chapter 21 as released on February 8, 2026. The English release was followed by Chapters 22 through 25, with the final chapter listed on March 8, 2026. VIZ subsequently announced the conclusion of the series, so Chapter 21 should be read as part of a completed 25-chapter story rather than as a currently upcoming installment. Read the official VIZ chapter listing.
The Japanese Shonen Jump+ page identifies the chapter as 第21話 待ち人来る. Its current platform listing displays July 11, 2026, which is a platform-page date and should not be confused with the original English simul-release date. The official Shonen Jump+ Chapter 21 page is the relevant Japanese source.
Spoiler warning: The explanation below discusses Tsurugi’s decision against Maru, Maki’s flashback, Dabura’s Domain Expansion, Yuji’s role in the Harmony plan, Yuki and Choso’s legacy, and Mahito’s appearance at the end of the chapter.
Tsurugi does not take the victory Maru expects
The emotional center of Chapter 21 is the climactic confrontation between Tsurugi and Maru. Tsurugi is capable of delivering the decisive attack, but he refuses to finish the fight in the expected way. Maru cuts Tsurugi down, yet Tsurugi’s apparent defeat is also the result of a deliberate choice: he will not pursue a victory that leads to Yuka’s death.
Maru may be essential to saving Yuka and to preventing the human–Simurian conflict from ending in extermination. Tsurugi therefore chooses the possibility of preserving Maru over the immediate satisfaction of winning. The decision is not passive mercy. It is a rejection of the idea that strength is proved by eliminating the opponent in front of you.

Tsurugi recognizes that Maru’s actions are tied to grief and loss. He refuses to reduce the conflict to humans versus Simurians, or to victory versus defeat, when the consequences would destroy the person he is trying to protect.
Why Tsurugi is compared with Toji and Maki
Chapter 21 opens with a childhood flashback involving Tsurugi and his grandmother, Maki Zenin. The conversation reframes Tsurugi’s strength through the family’s physically gifted Heavenly Restriction tradition. Maki discusses how loss shaped her, especially the death of her twin sister Mai, and the flashback connects that unresolved pain to the choices Tsurugi makes later in the chapter.
In the original Jujutsu Kaisen, Toji Fushiguro is the most prominent example of a fighter whose Heavenly Restriction leaves him without cursed energy while granting extraordinary physical ability, senses, stealth, and cursed-tool mastery. Maki eventually reaches a comparable state. Tsurugi is presented as part of that broader body-based power lineage.

That makes descriptions such as “Tsurugi’s Toji-like potential” or “the next physically gifted fighter” reasonable shorthand. It does not justify saying that Toji himself awakens in Chapter 21. There is no substantiated Toji resurrection or direct appearance here.

Toji, Maki, and Tsurugi are connected by bodies that compensate for the absence or limitation of conventional cursed-energy power, but Chapter 21 asks what such strength is for. Maki’s strength was shaped by the trauma surrounding Mai. Tsurugi now faces a choice about whether his own power will perpetuate isolation and destruction or make room for empathy. The strongest Toji/Maki connection is therefore not a surprise cameo; it is the chapter’s examination of power, grief, and the cost of surviving.
Dabura unveils a Domain Expansion
While Tsurugi and Maru’s conflict reaches its turning point, Dabura advances his fight with Mahoraga. Dabura manifests a Domain Expansion reported in English as “Otherworld Between Darkness and Light: Reverse Transcendence.”
The moment is significant because it represents the first Domain Expansion attributed to a Simurian or alien character in Modulo. It shows that the Simurians are not merely outsiders observing jujutsu society; they possess their own ways of reaching the highest levels of supernatural technique.
However, the chapter does not provide enough confirmed information to describe the Domain as an ordinary human-style sure-hit Domain with familiar mechanics. Reporting on the chapter specifically leaves uncertainty around how the alien Domain functions. Its name and manifestation are confirmed developments, but the exact rules, effect, and relationship to standard Domain Expansion principles should remain open questions rather than being presented as settled facts. Coverage of Dabura’s Domain and its translation provides the available context.
Maru’s Harmony plan brings Yuji back into the story
After the battle’s turning point, Maru locates and summons Yuji Itadori. Maru explains a plan built around Harmony: a proposed way to create a world in which cursed spirits are no longer born.
The plan involves several major pieces:
- The Kalyan, a central component of the proposed solution;
- the cursed energy stored in Yuta’s ring;
- the Naunax’s Mul;
- Tsurugi’s weapon; and
- the Harmony technique itself.
Maru also positions Yuji as an Earth representative or decision-maker in the proposed human–Simurian settlement. That role is important because the plan is not merely a combat technique that can be activated without consent. It presents an enormous political and metaphysical choice: whether humans and Simurians can cooperate on a solution that changes the basis of the world they inherited.
Chapter 21 does not confirm that the plan will succeed. It establishes the components, brings Yuji into the decision, and connects the plan to the unanswered question at the heart of the original series: what would happen if cursed energy—and therefore the birth of cursed spirits—could be ended?
Yuki and Choso’s unfinished legacy
Yuji contributes notes from Yuki Tsukumo on the nature of souls. He links the Harmony proposal to an unrealized goal associated with Yuki and Choso: finding a way toward a world that is no longer trapped in the cycle that produces cursed spirits.

This detail gives Modulo’s extraterrestrial conflict a direct connection to the original manga’s ideas about souls, cursed energy, and the possibility of changing humanity’s relationship with jujutsu. Yuki’s research is not presented as a complete answer, and Chapter 21 does not suddenly prove that cursed energy can be erased. Instead, her notes become part of the evidence and conceptual foundation for Maru’s plan.
The result is a shift in scale. Tsurugi’s battle begins as a personal crisis involving Yuka and Maru, but the consequences expand into a potential redesign of the world itself. The chapter’s strongest dramatic tension comes from the contrast between those two levels: Tsurugi is trying to save one person without killing another, while Maru and Yuji are being asked to consider the fate of every future soul.
Mahito is waiting for Yuji in the soul passageway
The chapter ends with Maru and Yuji entering a realm described as a passageway through which Earth’s souls travel. There, they encounter Mahito.
Mahito has been waiting for Yuji, but he is shocked to discover that Yuji is not dead and has only been summoned into the passageway. The reunion immediately carries the weight of their original-series conflict, while also placing Mahito at the center of Modulo’s new harmony proposal.

Where to read or collect Chapter 21
English readers can use the official VIZ/Shonen Jump chapter page for Chapter 21. Since the English serialization has already concluded at Chapter 25, readers who want the complete story should check the current VIZ series and volume information rather than relying on older “upcoming chapter” listings.
Japanese readers can find Chapter 21 through Shonen Jump+, which also links the completed series to Shueisha’s Digital Jump Comics editions. The Japanese collected edition is Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Volume 3, the final volume. It contains Chapters 17–25, including Chapter 21 beginning on page 91. Shueisha lists the Japanese print and digital release date as May 1, 2026; the print edition is 208 pages and has ISBN 978-4-08-885042-9. See Shueisha’s Volume 3 listing.
Readers looking for a physical copy can search for Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Volume 3, but check the live retailer listing carefully. The verified research does not establish a specific U.S. Amazon ASIN, current stock, seller, price, delivery date, or English-language edition. The Japanese Volume 3 import is confirmed; do not assume that every listing is translated into English.
For English-language collectors, VIZ has announced Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Volume 1 for Spring 2027. That announcement creates a future English-print route, but it does not confirm that an English Volume 3 is already available or establish the release date for the English collected edition containing Chapter 21. Check VIZ’s official announcements for updated English-volume information.

Chapter 21 deliberately invites a Toji comparison through Tsurugi’s physical ability and Maki’s family history, but it uses that expectation as a false lead. The important awakening is Tsurugi’s recognition that power without empathy would produce the very outcome he wants to prevent.
At the same time, Dabura’s Domain proves that the Simurians have an unfamiliar supernatural tradition, while Maru’s plan connects Tsurugi’s weapon, Yuta’s ring, the Kalyan, the Naunax’s Mul, Harmony, and Yuji’s judgment. Yuki and Choso’s research gives the plan historical weight, and Mahito’s appearance turns the final page into a direct confrontation with the problem of souls.
So the accurate headline is not “Toji Fushiguro awakens.” It is this: Tsurugi shows why he belongs in the Toji–Maki conversation, then chooses coexistence over a clean victory as the story moves toward its largest question—whether cursed energy itself can disappear.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Chapter 21 is not a literal Toji comeback. Tsurugi inherits the body-based power tradition associated with Toji and Maki, but his defining breakthrough is choosing empathy and coexistence over a victory that would cost Yuka’s life. Dabura’s alien Domain, Maru’s Harmony plan, Yuji’s new role, and Mahito’s return set up the series’ final question: can the cycle that creates cursed spirits finally be broken?
