Manga spoilers through Chapter 271, including the end of the Sukuna fight.
Yuji Itadori’s Domain Expansion is an unnamed, enclosed domain that externalizes his innate domain and imbues it with his version of Shrine. Its confirmed sure-hit effect is Dismantle aimed at the boundary between Sukuna’s soul and Megumi Fushiguro’s soul. The train station, hometown, and memories are the domain’s setting and psychological expression—not the confirmed attack itself.

The short answer: Yuji’s domain is a soul-severing Shrine domain
Yuji first uses Domain Expansion in Chapter 264, during the Shinjuku Showdown against Sukuna. The domain combines four developments in Yuji’s abilities:
- Barrier training: Yuji gained a practical foundation in barrier techniques through replacement training with Atsuya Kusakabe.
- Access to Shrine: Sukuna’s cursed technique became engraved in Yuji through their connection as vessel and incarnated sorcerer.
- Soul awareness: Yuji learned to perceive and attack the soul through his experiences with Mahito, Sukuna, and the separation of incarnated souls.
- A specialized target: Yuji refined Dismantle so that it attacks the boundary separating Sukuna from Megumi.
When Yuji places that version of Dismantle inside a domain, the technique becomes a sure-hit effect. This is why the domain is such a dangerous counter to Sukuna: Yuji is not merely trying to cut through Sukuna’s physical toughness. He is attacking the connection that allows Sukuna to possess Megumi’s body.
#1 Best Overall
Shueisha’s official description of Jujutsu Kaisen, Vol. 30 confirms this chain of events by describing Yuji’s Dismantle striking the boundary between Sukuna’s soul and Fushiguro’s, followed by the domain’s sure-hit effect pressing Sukuna.
When does Yuji use Domain Expansion?
Yuji activates his domain for the first time in Chapter 264, immediately before the final stage of his battle with Sukuna. The chapter recalls Gojo explaining the basic principle of a domain: an attack activated inside the domain is guaranteed to hit its intended target.
The scene also connects Yuji’s sudden technical progress to the replacement training he underwent with Kusakabe. That training supplied Yuji with a foundation in barrier techniques, but the manga does not show a complete curriculum or state that Kusakabe directly taught Yuji a named Domain Expansion. The careful conclusion is that Kusakabe’s instruction helped Yuji develop the barrier fundamentals needed to create his own domain.
What does Yuji’s Domain Expansion look like?
At the moment of activation, Sukuna finds himself in a train-station-like environment. He appears in the form he had while serving as Yuji’s incarnated vessel, while Yuji appears in an earlier version of himself. In Chapter 265, the setting develops into a walk through Yuji’s hometown, including places and experiences associated with his memories.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This scenery is not random. A Domain Expansion externalizes a sorcerer’s innate domain—the internal, metaphysical landscape associated with the person’s mind, identity, and cursed technique. Yuji’s domain therefore looks like Yuji: ordinary streets, familiar places, family memories, and the experience of moving through the world with other people.
Sukuna comments that intense clashes between sorcerers can produce a shared imaginary landscape. That observation explains why the sequence has the quality of a psychological conversation as well as a combat technique. It does not mean the domain is only a vision or that nothing real is happening. Later official Volume 30 material explicitly identifies Yuji’s Domain Expansion and its sure-hit effect.
What the scenery means—and what it does not do
The hometown imagery supports a strong thematic reading. Yuji’s domain presents everyday life, memory, community, and human connection against Sukuna’s belief that strength and personal desire are the only things that matter. That contrast is important to the scene’s meaning, but it is interpretation rather than a separately stated rule of the technique.
There is no confirmed evidence that the train station or hometown scenery independently damages an opponent, controls their mind, forces them to talk, or persuades them to change their beliefs. The setting expresses Yuji’s innate domain; the confirmed combat effect is the Dismantle sure-hit.

What technique is imbued into Yuji’s domain?
The technique embedded in the domain is Yuji’s version of Shrine, specifically Dismantle. It resembles Sukuna’s slashing technique because it originates from the same cursed technique, but Yuji’s application has a different purpose and target.
| Part of the technique | What it contributes |
|---|---|
| Yuji’s innate domain | The internal landscape that becomes the domain’s train station and hometown setting. |
| Shrine | The cursed technique engraved in Yuji through his connection with Sukuna. |
| Dismantle | The cutting technique Yuji applies to the boundary between Sukuna and Megumi’s souls. |
| Domain Expansion | The barrier and technique framework that turns the selected Dismantle into a sure-hit effect. |
The important distinction is that Yuji does not simply reproduce Sukuna’s Domain Expansion. The official material checked does not call Yuji’s domain Malevolent Shrine, and it does not provide a separate proper name for Yuji’s version. Terms such as Benevolent Shrine are fan labels, not confirmed canon names.
Why does Yuji target the boundary between Sukuna and Megumi?
Sukuna is not merely fighting from outside Megumi’s body. He has incarnated within Megumi and taken control of him. That creates a special relationship between two souls occupying one body.
Yuji’s Dismantle is designed to exploit that relationship. Rather than treating Sukuna and Megumi as one undifferentiated physical target, Yuji aims at the seam between them. A normal slash could injure Sukuna’s body, but a strike at this boundary attacks Sukuna’s hold over Megumi directly.
This is why the technique is a counter to possession. Yuji’s objective is not simply to make a stronger cut than Sukuna can endure. He is trying to separate the incarnated sorcerer from the host.
Sukuna recognizes the danger before Yuji’s domain becomes decisive. If the soul-targeting Dismantle connects with the relevant boundary, it can threaten the structure of Sukuna’s control over Megumi. The domain then removes the most important uncertainty—whether Yuji can make the attack connect—by making the imbued technique a sure-hit.
How Sukuna resists the domain
Yuji’s domain does not instantly end the fight. Sukuna uses Hollow Wicker Basket, an anti-domain technique, to suppress or delay the sure-hit effect.
Rank #3
In Chapter 266, Sukuna continues fighting while maintaining the hand sign required for Hollow Wicker Basket. This defense gives him a way to resist the domain, but it limits what he can do and is placed under increasing pressure as Yuji keeps attacking.

- Yuji activates his domain. The domain’s sure-hit is the soul-targeting Dismantle aimed at Sukuna’s connection to Megumi.
- Sukuna deploys Hollow Wicker Basket. The anti-domain technique suppresses or delays the guaranteed attack.
- Yuji destabilizes the defense. His continued attacks make it increasingly difficult for Sukuna to maintain the protection while fighting normally.
- Sukuna restores Shrine and attempts another domain. He tries to regain the initiative by preparing his own Domain Expansion.
- Nobara intervenes. Nobara uses Resonance on Sukuna’s final finger. The disruption interferes with Sukuna’s attempt to complete his domain.
- Yuji’s sure-hit becomes decisive. With Sukuna exposed, Yuji continues attacking the soul boundary and lands the Black Flash sequence that helps bring the battle to its conclusion.
The domain is therefore one part of a coordinated endgame rather than an isolated automatic victory. Hollow Wicker Basket gives Sukuna a defense, while Nobara’s Resonance prevents him from replacing that defense with another completed domain at the critical moment.
Is the train ride or conversation Yuji’s sure-hit?
No. Nothing confirmed in the manga or official Volume 30 description says that Yuji wins by forcing Sukuna to take a train ride, relive memories, have a conversation, or accept Yuji’s worldview.
The conversation is meaningful because it exposes the difference between the two characters. Yuji tries to understand Sukuna and argues from a belief in the value of other people. Sukuna rejects that outlook. The exchange gives the domain emotional and thematic weight, but it is not established as memory manipulation, guaranteed persuasion, or a mind-control effect.
The confirmed mechanical effect is much more specific: Dismantle is imbued into the domain and guaranteed to strike the relevant soul boundary. Calling the sequence “talk-no-jutsu” can be a joke or fan interpretation, but it should not be presented as the technique’s canon ability.
Is Yuji’s domain the same as Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine?
No. Yuji’s domain uses a Shrine-derived technique, but that does not make it Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine.
The similarities are clear: both domains are connected to Shrine and use slashing attacks. The difference is the user’s application and objective. Sukuna’s domain is associated with his own overwhelming area-wide slashing attack, while Yuji’s confirmed sure-hit is tailored to the boundary between Sukuna and Megumi’s souls.

Yuji’s domain is also presented as an enclosed, conventional domain. The story does not give it the same officially named identity as Malevolent Shrine, and no official source checked supplies a proper name for Yuji’s domain. The safest description is simply Yuji’s Domain Expansion or Yuji’s unnamed domain.
What is still unknown about the domain?
The manga confirms the domain’s central function but does not provide every technical specification. These limits matter because fan explanations often turn unanswered questions into supposed facts.
| Question | What can be said canonically |
|---|---|
| Does it have an official name? | No proper domain name has been supplied in the official material checked. |
| How large is it? | The exact barrier radius is not stated. |
| How long can Yuji maintain it? | No maximum operating time is provided. |
| Can the hometown scenery attack or control people? | That has not been confirmed. The scenery is the domain’s setting and innate-domain expression. |
| Can Yuji target any opponent’s soul boundary? | It is not confirmed. The technique is specifically demonstrated against the unusual Sukuna–Megumi dual-soul situation. |
| Can Yuji repeatedly expand the domain after technique burnout? | The story does not establish whether he can do so. |
| Is every slash inside the domain identical to Sukuna’s slashes? | No. The confirmed claim is that Yuji embeds his Dismantle into the domain as its sure-hit. |
These gaps do not make the domain vague in its most important respect. Its demonstrated purpose is clear: Yuji uses a Shrine-derived Dismantle to attack Sukuna’s separation from Megumi, and Domain Expansion makes that attack guaranteed unless Sukuna can counter it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Yuji’s domain fits his overall growth
Yuji’s Domain Expansion is the result of several abilities converging at the end of the story.
- Barrier fundamentals: Kusakabe’s replacement training gave Yuji a working foundation in barrier techniques.
- Understanding the soul: Yuji’s battles with Mahito and Sukuna taught him that the soul is not an abstract idea but a meaningful target in combat.
- Connection to Sukuna: Through Sukuna’s time inside him, Shrine became engraved in Yuji.
- Refined Dismantle: Yuji adapted the technique toward the boundary between two souls instead of using it only as a conventional physical slash.
- Domain construction: Yuji combined the technique with his innate domain and barrier knowledge, creating a sure-hit version of the attack.
That makes the domain less of a random final power-up and more of a synthesis of Yuji’s story. He uses an ability associated with Sukuna, but applies it toward freeing Megumi rather than dominating another person. He also turns an understanding of the soul—one of the sources of his suffering—into the tool that can defeat Sukuna’s possession.
Anime and current-canon status
The original Jujutsu Kaisen manga is complete through Chapter 271, so Yuji’s domain is no longer dependent on future chapters of the main story. The original manga concluded in September 2024.
As of August 11, 2026, the official information about Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo describes it as a short, near-future spin-off written by Gege Akutami and drawn by Yuji Iwasaki. Its official listing places the story 68 years after the Culling Game and confirms that Yuji appears in the later material. The available official listings do not rename Yuji’s original domain or technically redefine its sure-hit. Readers can consult the official Manga Plus listing for Modulo and the official Jujutsu Kaisen anime story page for current franchise information.

For anime-only viewers, this is a major manga spoiler. The anime has not yet reached Yuji’s Domain Expansion sequence. The official anime site confirms that the later Culling Game continuation is in production, but it does not mean the domain has already been adapted or that an anime-specific explanation exists.
Final verdict
Yuji’s Domain Expansion is an unnamed, enclosed manifestation of his innate domain. Its train station and hometown scenery show Yuji’s inner world, but they are not the confirmed attack. The actual sure-hit is Yuji’s Shrine-derived Dismantle, specially aimed at the boundary between Sukuna’s soul and Megumi’s soul.
That targeting is the key to the technique. Yuji is not trying only to cut Sukuna’s body; he is trying to separate Sukuna from his host. Sukuna’s Hollow Wicker Basket can delay the sure-hit, but Yuji’s pressure, Nobara’s Resonance, and the disruption of Sukuna’s attempted counter-domain eventually leave the soul-boundary attack decisive.
