Gojo is not truly back. The person confronting Sukuna has Satoru Gojo’s body, but Yuta Okkotsu’s consciousness is controlling it. Readers should distinguish between pre-release leaks and the published chapter. Leak threads and social-media posts circulated theories about the stitches, Gojo’s apparent return, and Yuta copying Kenjaku’s technique. Those posts were not the authoritative source. The official chapter is the basis for the spoilers and explanation below.
Is Gojo really back?
No—not as Gojo. Chapter 261 confirms that Yuta has transferred his brain into Gojo’s corpse and is now operating Gojo’s body. The figure looks like Gojo and possesses the same overwhelming presence, but the stitches across the forehead immediately distinguish the body from the Gojo readers knew.

Sukuna recognizes what has happened almost immediately. He understands that Yuta has copied and used Kenjaku’s body-transfer technique. The reveal therefore recreates the shock of Kenjaku possessing Suguru Geto, but with a very different motive: Yuta has voluntarily turned himself into a weapon in order to protect the remaining sorcerers.
Chapter 261 begins with Yuji and Todo attacking Sukuna
The chapter opens in the Shinjuku Showdown. Yuji Itadori, supported by Aoi Todo, continues pressuring Sukuna. Yuji attacks with the intention of crushing Sukuna’s heart while Sukuna begins preparing another Domain Expansion.
Before Sukuna can fully focus on that response, a presence emerges from the smoke. The body, face, cursed-energy pressure, and timing all suggest that Gojo has somehow returned to the battlefield. It is an intentionally staged shock: for a moment, both Sukuna and the reader are encouraged to interpret the arrival as Gojo’s resurrection.
Then the forehead stitches reveal the truth. This is Gojo’s body, but Yuta is the person inside it.

Why did Yuta use Gojo’s body?
Yuta’s transfer was a contingency plan, not the group’s original strategy. Before the battle, Yuta proposed using Kenjaku’s copied technique if Gojo died and Yuta himself failed to defeat Sukuna. The other sorcerers rejected the idea at first because the possible consequences were extreme:
- Yuta could die during the procedure.
- His consciousness could become permanently trapped in Gojo’s body.
- The transfer could leave him unable to use the body effectively.
- Rika’s limited period of full manifestation might not sustain him long enough.
- Even if the operation worked, Yuta could be forced to live permanently as someone else.
Yuta and Kinji Hakari nevertheless treated the plan as their last resort. Yuta would fight Sukuna in his own body first. Only after being critically wounded and unable to continue would he authorize the transfer.
Yuta chooses to become the “monster”
The argument over the plan is not only about medical risk. It is also about whether the jujutsu world is willing to reduce another young sorcerer to a disposable tool.

Kusakabe condemns the idea as inhumane. Yuta’s response is that the group has already accepted morally terrible choices because Sukuna’s threat leaves them almost no alternatives. He challenges the others for accepting Gojo’s isolation as the strongest while objecting when Yuta volunteers to carry a similar burden.

Yuta ultimately says that he will become the “monster” necessary to defeat Sukuna. That statement is central to the chapter’s meaning. He is not merely borrowing Gojo’s abilities. He is accepting the role that consumed Gojo: the person expected to bear the entire jujutsu world’s impossible responsibility alone.
Gojo had already agreed to the plan
One of the most important flashbacks shows that Yuta discussed the possibility with Gojo before Gojo’s decisive fight against Sukuna. Gojo knew that Yuta might use his corpse and agreed to the contingency.
The conversation also revisits the characters’ lineage. Takako Uro had suggested that Yuta could descend from the Fujiwara clan, while Gojo is connected to the Sugawara line. Gojo treats the ancestry question as less important than the immediate crisis and continues helping Yuta improve his cursed-energy control.
The flashback reinforces Gojo’s relationship with his students. When Gojo prepares to confront the higher-ups, the students refuse to leave him to carry the burden by himself. It also recalls Gojo’s feeling that he had been left behind by Suguru Geto and needed to catch up. In Chapter 261, that old isolation becomes a warning: Gojo’s students are trying to prevent Yuta from inheriting not just Gojo’s power, but also Gojo’s loneliness.

The chapter explains that several people prepared for the procedure.
Rin Amai and the medical support
Rin Amai demonstrates that his technique can produce sugar from his body in the form of pudding. Shoko Ieiri recruits him because the supply may help sustain a brain while a sorcerer repeatedly activates cursed techniques. The detail is strange on the surface, but it gives the medical team a practical resource for keeping Yuta’s brain alive during the operation.

Arata Nitta and Shoko Ieiri
Arata Nitta stabilizes Yuta’s severely damaged body. Shoko prepares Gojo’s corpse, including suturing the body before the transfer. These steps make clear that Yuta’s return to the battlefield is not a supernatural resurrection. It is an emergency medical procedure performed on two badly damaged bodies.
Rika’s remaining support
Yuta remains conscious largely because Rika continues sustaining him, but that support is approaching its limit. Yuta therefore orders Shoko to proceed rather than wait for a safer moment.
After the transfer, Shoko tells Yuta to use Reverse Cursed Technique at maximum output to complete the treatment from inside Gojo’s body. Yuta also apologizes to Rika for wearing the ring on his right hand. That small exchange highlights the emotional price of the plan and Yuta’s continued dependence on Rika even while he is using an entirely different body.
What happens at the end of Chapter 261?
The chapter ends with the battle’s most important immediate development: Yuta, inside Gojo’s body, activates Unlimited Void while Sukuna activates Malevolent Shrine.
Yuta has studied Gojo’s earlier response to Sukuna’s open-barrier domain and enters the clash with a method intended to withstand it. However, Chapter 261 does not resolve the battle. It ends as the two domains collide, leaving the outcome for Chapter 262.
The cliffhanger raises several questions:
- Can Yuta reproduce Gojo’s Unlimited Void effectively?
- How much of Gojo’s technique can Yuta control immediately?
- Can he survive the time limit associated with the copied technique?
- Will Rika’s support or Yuta’s transferred brain fail first?
- Will Yuta remain in Gojo’s body permanently if he survives?
Chapter 261 sets up these questions but does not answer them. In particular, it does not confirm that Gojo’s consciousness has returned or that Yuta’s survival is guaranteed.
What Chapter 261 confirms
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is Gojo resurrected? | No. Yuta is controlling Gojo’s body. |
| What technique made the transfer possible? | Yuta copied Kenjaku’s body-transfer technique. |
| Was the plan created during the fight? | No. It was discussed in advance as a last resort. |
| Did Gojo know about it? | Yes. Gojo agreed to the possibility before his final battle. |
| Is Yuta guaranteed to survive? | No. The procedure may kill him or permanently bind him to Gojo’s body. |
| Who wins the final domain clash? | Chapter 261 does not reveal the result. |
Why the reveal matters
Yuta inherits Gojo’s role literally
The series has repeatedly asked whether the next generation can surpass or replace Gojo. Chapter 261 makes that question physically literal. Yuta does not simply inherit Gojo’s teachings or attempt to imitate his strength; he occupies Gojo’s body and fights using Gojo’s signature domain.

- Join Monkey D. Luffy and his swashbuckling crew in their search for the ultimate treasure, One Piece
- As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer "Red-Haired" Shanks
- But his life changed when Luffy accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber
That apparent succession is also disturbing. Yuta’s “inheritance” requires the destruction of his own bodily identity and risks taking away his future. The chapter presents becoming the next Gojo as an act of sacrifice rather than a triumphant promotion.
The sorcerers are weaponizing people
The debate over Yuta’s plan exposes the same system that treated Gojo as the jujutsu world’s ultimate weapon. The others object when Yuta is asked to surrender his identity, but Yuta points out that they have already accepted Gojo’s isolation and repeatedly depended on his overwhelming power.
His decision is voluntary, but the surrounding circumstances make that choice ethically complicated. A person can volunteer for an act of self-destruction and still be shaped by a system that leaves no humane alternative.

Visually and mechanically, Yuta’s action recalls Kenjaku’s possession of Geto’s body. Both involve a brain controlling a different person’s corpse. The difference is the emotional context. Kenjaku’s body-hopping is part of a long-term scheme of experimentation and manipulation, while Yuta uses the technique openly and at enormous personal cost to save his friends.
The parallel nevertheless makes the reveal unsettling. Even a heroic motive does not make the act clean or consequence-free.
Gojo’s loneliness passes to his students
Gojo’s students want to support him, but the battle forces them to reproduce the very structure that isolated him. Yuta becomes the person who must use an extraordinary body, technique, and sacrifice to keep everyone else alive. Chapter 261 suggests that replacing Gojo without changing the conditions around him may simply create another isolated “strongest.”

Best Value
For a collected edition, Jujutsu Kaisen Vol. 29 is the relevant volume: Shueisha’s official listing places Chapter 261 in it, alongside Chapters 255 through 263. VIZ’s English product record lists the English paperback and digital release for February 17, 2026. It is the best physical recommendation for readers who want this chapter as part of the surrounding Shinjuku Showdown sequence.
Readers who want the immediate setup and continuation can look for Vol. 28 and Vol. 30, while remembering that Chapter 261 itself is in Vol. 29. For background on Yuta and Rika, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is the most relevant earlier manga. the official character guide is useful as supplementary reference material for readers who want a refresher on Yuta, Gojo, Sukuna, Rika, and the wider cast, but it does not replace the chapter.

The Bottom Line
