In July 1988, Barsi and her mother, Maria, were killed by Barsi’s father, Jozsef, who then died by suicide, according to contemporary Los Angeles Times reporting. Accounts published afterward also described warnings to county child-welfare authorities and criticism of the agency’s response.
Who voiced Ducky in The Land Before Time?
Judith Barsi was the child actor who voiced Ducky, the cheerful young “threehorn,” in The Land Before Time. The American Film Institute’s catalog records the film’s release date as 18 November 1988. Barsi also voiced Anne-Marie in All Dogs Go to Heaven, listed by AFI as a 1989 film.

Those release dates came after Barsi’s death in July 1988. They establish when the films were released, not when she recorded or completed her performances. AFI Catalog: The Land Before Time and Judith Barsi filmography.
What happened to Judith Barsi and her mother?
On 29 July 1988, the Los Angeles Times reported that Judith and her mother, Maria, had been found dead in their West Hills home. Police attributed the killings and subsequent suicide to Judith’s father, Jozsef Barsi. In the same report, Los Angeles Police Department Lt. Warren Knowles said, “There had been domestic problems.” The Los Angeles Times’ identification report.

Contemporary coverage was inconsistent about Judith’s age: the 29 July identification report described her as 11, while other reporting called her 10. It is more accurate to identify her as a child actor than to repeat an unqualified age.
What warnings and agency response were reported?
A later Los Angeles Times investigation reported that family friends and others had described threats by Jozsef to county child-welfare authorities. The article said the department’s inquiry was closed in June after Maria told officials that she and Judith would move. These details are the newspaper’s account of the reported warnings and inquiry; the public article does not provide the underlying case files. The Times’ 7 August 1988 investigation.

What did the county commission criticize?
In September 1988, the county Commission for Children’s Services criticized the agency’s handling of the inquiry and recommended changes, according to the Los Angeles Times. The paper reported that the caseworker assigned to the matter had 67 cases—27 above what the commission described as a full caseload. That figure describes the worker’s assignment in this 1988 case, not present-day staffing.
Commission member Thomas L. Becket said, “Lack of funds is an excuse, to a degree, but it can only go so far.” Member Helen A. Kleinberg observed, “This is part of the whole problem: It’s easy to focus on physical abuse because we can see it.” These were comments in the commission discussion reported at the time, not current expert guidance. The newspaper said the commission reviewed confidential files, but its public account does not reproduce them. Its criticism documents a contemporary institutional review; it does not, by itself, establish a complete causal explanation for the killings. The Times’ 7 September 1988 report.

Remembering Barsi beyond the tragedy
The same July identification report described Barsi as having appeared in about 50 television commercials, as well as television and film roles. That contemporary estimate was not an independently audited count. Her work as Ducky and Anne-Marie remains part of her professional record, but neither the films’ later release nor her career explains or excuses the violence that ended her life. Remembering Barsi means holding both facts together: she was a working child actor, and she and her mother were victims of a family killing that prompted public scrutiny of the agency response.
