Kate Middleton wore a sheer black-and-gold garment designed by fashion student Charlotte Todd at a St Andrews charity fashion show in 2002. Todd had made it as a skirt for a university project; Middleton wore it as a dress. The appearance is documented, but the familiar claim that the outfit sparked her romance with Prince William remains an unproven retrospective story.

Who designed the dress, and what was it made for?

The designer was Charlotte Todd, then studying fashion and textiles at the University of the West of England. She created the piece for a project titled “The Art of Seduction.” Todd originally intended it to be a skirt, not a dress, according to British Vogue; The Independent also reports that it was made as a skirt before Middleton wore it as a dress.

The auction catalogue described the garment as a knitted mesh slip-dress. It specifies a fine gold-and-black knitted silk body, peacock-blue trim at the hem, and an elasticated upper band in blue wool. Those construction details come from the Kerry Taylor Auctions lot record.

When and where did Kate Middleton wear it?

Middleton wore Todd’s garment at a student charity fashion show associated with the University of St Andrews in 2002. British Vogue’s 2023 retrospective gives the date as 26 March 2002 and the venue as the St Andrews Bay Hotel. Those specific date and venue details are retrospective reporting; the auction record and later sale coverage also identify the garment with the St Andrews show.

The moment became widely remembered because a student-designed piece appeared on Middleton before she became Princess of Wales. Its later fame should not obscure the basic history: it was a project garment, made by a student, and worn at a university-linked charity event.

Did the dress cause William and Kate to fall in love?

That the dress “caught William’s eye” is a popular version of the story, not an established fact. The Independent reported that Prince William was at the show and that the pair’s friendship later developed into romance. But that does not demonstrate that the dress caused their relationship.

British Vogue’s retrospective notes that accounts from the time described William and Kate as still dating other people and as friends at the show. The appearance is documented; a direct causal link between the outfit and their romance is not. Treat the “dress that started it all” framing as folklore rather than a verified account of what happened between them.

What happened to the original dress at auction?

Kerry Taylor Auctions sold Todd’s garment in 2011. British Vogue and The Independent reported a sale price of £78,000. Associated Press, in a report carried by CBS News, gave £65,000 excluding the 20 percent buyer’s premium. The figures describe different price bases: the lower figure is before that premium, while £78,000 is the commonly reported total.

Before the sale, a 2010 British Vogue article reported an estimate of up to £100,000. That was a pre-sale estimate, not the amount achieved. Vogue also reported that the garment had cost Todd £30 to make. After the auction, Todd told the magazine, “I am totally speechless, and feel very emotional,” adding, “I really didn’t think it would make that amount.”

Is the dress in The Crown the original?

No. The Crown recreated the look for its dramatization of the fashion show; it did not use the original garment. British Vogue reports that the production used different fabrics and ribbon thread while retaining recognizable features. Costume designer Amy Roberts said the team did not get permission to copy the original from Todd, so they recreated it to make the reference recognizable without reproducing it exactly.

The series’ scene is a dramatic interpretation, not documentary footage. Its costume evokes the historical outfit, but the original was Todd’s student-made garment that Middleton wore in 2002 and that later sold at auction.
