JonBenét Ramsey’s 1996 killing remains unsolved: no one has been prosecuted, and Boulder Police say the investigation is open and ongoing. Netflix’s upcoming The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey is a separate limited series—not a sequel to its 2024 documentary—and had not premiered as of October 8, 2026. Netflix has announced a December 10, 2026 release, but the new series is not evidence of a breakthrough or a confirmed answer.

Boulder Police describe the case as open and ongoing. Their case page includes a December 2025 update saying detectives conducted new interviews and re-interviews based on tips, collected new evidence, and tested and retested evidence to generate leads. Police say they continue working with DNA experts and law-enforcement partners, but cannot comment on specific aspects of an active investigation.
What police report about the investigation
- More than 21,016 tips, letters, and emails — Boulder Police Department, case-page cumulative figure (page includes a December 2025 update).
- More than 1,000 individuals — Boulder Police Department, case-page cumulative figure (page includes a December 2025 update).
- 19 states — Boulder Police Department, case-page cumulative figure (page includes a December 2025 update).
These are figures published on the department’s case page, not independent measures of progress or a clearly dated 2026 count. They do not establish who committed the homicide.

Who killed JonBenét Ramsey?
The killer has not been identified in a prosecution, and the reviewed public updates do not establish who killed her. Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn said, in a video statement reported by the Associated Press: “What I can tell you though, is we have thoroughly investigated multiple people as suspects throughout the years and we continue to be open-minded about what occurred as we investigate the tips that come into detectives.”
The AP also reports that former district attorney Mary Lacy issued a 2008 letter clearing John and Patsy Ramsey and their son Burke. Lacy’s letter relied on DNA evidence from JonBenét’s clothing that pointed to an “unexplained third party”; she called the Ramseys “victims of this crime.” That decision did not identify or prosecute a perpetrator, and it should not be mistaken for a solved case.
Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty, in a statement published on the police case page, said: “In every one of those cases, it was the evidence that proved the defendant(s) guilty. Whether it is DNA or other evidence, more is needed to solve this murder.”

Netflix’s 2024 title, Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey, is a three-part documentary. Netflix describes it as examining law-enforcement handling of the case and media scrutiny. Its 2025 promotional interview says it includes previously unseen material, including portions of detective Lou Smit’s audio diaries, and an interview with former Boulder district attorney Alex Hunter. Those are descriptions of the program, not independent findings about the homicide.
| Production | Format | What Netflix has said | What it establishes about the case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey (2024) | Three-part documentary | Examines investigative handling and media scrutiny; Netflix’s 2025 interview describes archival material and an interview with Alex Hunter. | It is a documentary treatment, not a new official case finding. |
| The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey (announced for December 10, 2026) | Limited series | Netflix says it will explore the case’s national impact and its personal and public aftermath. | Not yet available to evaluate as of October 8, 2026; the announcement does not establish new evidence or a solution. |
Netflix’s 2025 promotional interview quotes director Joe Berlinger saying, “There is zero chance that the family had anything to do with this horrendous crime.” That is Berlinger’s opinion in a promotional interview, not a judicial finding or an official law-enforcement conclusion.
Why is Netflix releasing another JonBenét Ramsey series?
Netflix says the new limited series will examine how the case captivated and divided the nation and its personal and public aftermath. That supports describing it as a new series treatment of a case Netflix considers nationally consequential. Netflix’s public announcement does not provide its internal commissioning rationale, and the announcement should not be read as a signal that investigators have made a breakthrough.
