According to the Associated Press’s account of police reporting, officers were dispatched to a home in south San Antonio on June 1, 2025. They found Joss wounded near the street, attempted lifesaving measures, and EMS pronounced him dead. The San Antonio Police Department’s statement, quoted by AP on June 2, was: “EMS pronounced the victim deceased.” The Associated Press reported the incident details.

Joss was 59. He was widely known for voicing John Redcorn, a recurring character on King of the Hill.
What is known about the reported slurs and motive?
Joss’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, told AP that he and Joss had been checking the mail at their former home, which had been heavily damaged in a January fire that killed their three dogs. De Gonzales said the shooter used violent homophobic slurs. That is his account of the incident, not a finding by investigators.

Police initially said they had found no evidence connecting the shooting to Joss’s sexual orientation. Police Chief William McManus later called that statement “premature” and said investigators were examining whether sexual orientation played a role. No hate-crime motive has been established in the reporting cited here. AP reported the husband’s account and police statements.
What is the status of the criminal case?
The Associated Press reported that a grand jury indicted Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez on a murder charge in November 2025. An indictment is an accusation, not a conviction.

Joss voiced John Redcorn on the original King of the Hill, which ran for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2008, according to AP. Redcorn is a recurring character in the animated comedy. Joss had also worked on the show’s revival before it premiered in August 2025, after his death. AP reported on Joss’s work on the revival.
