His criticism followed a cancellation that drew scrutiny over its timing, but the available reporting does not establish that politics caused CBS’s decision.
What Jon Stewart said about Colbert’s cancellation
The Daily Show published its official listing of Stewart’s response on July 21, 2025. It says he called on corporations, advertisers, and institutions to “sack up.” The listing summarizes the segment; it is not a full transcript, so that short phrase should not be treated as a complete account of his remarks. Why CBS said it was ending The Late Show
CBS announced on July 17, 2025, that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end in May 2026 and that the network would retire The Late Show franchise. CBS characterized the move as “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night,” as relayed by CBS News. That is the network’s public explanation.
Why the timing prompted questions about motive
The cancellation announcement came three days after Colbert criticized Paramount’s settlement with Donald Trump over a 60 Minutes story. The Associated Press reported that the sequence prompted two U.S. senators to publicly question CBS’s motives. Associated Press coverage

The timing explains why the decision attracted scrutiny, but it does not by itself prove a political reason for the cancellation. The cited reporting documents CBS’s financial rationale and the questions raised about motive; it does not independently establish that political considerations drove the decision.
When the show ended
