As of October 8, 2026, Jon Stewart’s future on The Daily Show remained unresolved. His contract was reported to run through December 2026, and an August report said Paramount wanted him to stay but had not reached an extension. Stewart’s earlier remarks about not knowing the show’s future came in July 2025, after CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end.

What is known about Stewart’s Daily Show contract?

On August 17, 2026, TheWrap reported that Stewart’s contract ran through December 2026 and that no extension had been reached. The article, citing an unnamed Paramount insider, said the company wanted him back. That reported interest was not a renewal announcement or a signed deal.

The reporting reviewed through October 8 did not establish whether Stewart would continue after his contract expired. It would therefore be inaccurate to say he had left, renewed, or been dismissed. Paramount+ listings showed The Daily Show season 31 episodes dated into late September and early October 2026, evidence that episodes continued to appear in that period—not confirmation of Stewart’s status beyond December.

What did Stewart say when Colbert’s cancellation was announced?

On July 17, 2025, Stephen Colbert announced that CBS would end The Late Show in May 2026. That same day, Stewart said on his podcast, The Weekly Show, that he had not heard from Paramount about The Daily Show’s future. TV Insider reported his words: “Unfortunately, we haven’t heard anything from them.” Stewart said he honestly did not know what would happen and that Paramount had not called to warn him not to get comfortable.

Stewart also argued that The Daily Show mattered to Comedy Central, saying he would like to believe that “without The Daily Show, Comedy Central is kind of like muzak at this point.” This was his view of the program’s importance, not news of a contract decision.

Why did CBS end The Late Show?

CBS said the cancellation was a financial decision, not one related to the show’s performance, content, or other matters at Paramount. CBS News reported on the franchise’s eventual finale and described the run as 33 years. Political explanations for the cancellation circulated, but they were speculation; they should not be confused with CBS’s stated reason.

How did Stewart respond to Colbert’s last show?

Stewart publicly defended Colbert soon after the cancellation announcement. On The Daily Show, he said, “This is not the moment to give in,” followed by, “I’m not giving in. I’m not going anywhere. I think.” The Associated Press reported the remarks on July 21, 2025. The final “I think” matters: Stewart was responding to Colbert’s cancellation, not making a definitive promise about his own contract.

The Late Show aired its finale on May 21, 2026, ending the franchise’s 33-year run. Stewart appeared in the finale. Colbert told him, “I didn’t think my show would end like this, but still grateful,” according to CBS News. The previous evening, Stewart had spoken with Colbert about life after a canceled television show; Paramount Press Express’s episode description summarized his message as “there’s a great life on the other side of a cancelled TV show.” Paramount Press Express provides that description, rather than a full transcript.

When What happened What it establishes
July 17, 2025 Colbert announced The Late Show would end in May 2026; Stewart said he had not heard from Paramount about The Daily Show’s future. Stewart did not then know what would happen to his show.
July 21, 2025 Stewart defended Colbert and said, “I’m not giving in. I’m not going anywhere. I think.” A response to Colbert’s cancellation, not a confirmed renewal of Stewart’s own contract.
May 20–21, 2026 Stewart spoke with Colbert before appearing in The Late Show finale. Colbert’s program ended; this did not resolve Stewart’s separate contract.
August 17, 2026 TheWrap reported Stewart’s deal ran through December, with no extension reached, and that Paramount wanted him back. Reported interest, but no signed extension.
October 2026 Season 31 episode listings appeared into late September and early October. Episodes continued to be listed in that period, not confirmation of Stewart’s post-December status.

Stewart originally hosted The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015 and returned in 2024, according to TV Insider. That history helps explain why his contract attracted attention, but it does not determine what Paramount and Stewart agreed to next.
