Joker: Folie à Deux has a promising dramatic premise: Arthur Fleck, now institutionalized at Arkham and awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker, must confront the public identity he has made. Its songs are meant to make that conflict audible. Too often, though, the musical passages feel like pauses in a story that needs to move forward.
What is Joker: Folie à Deux about?
Todd Phillips’s follow-up to Joker brings Joaquin Phoenix back as Arthur Fleck, with Lady Gaga joining the cast. Warner Bros. frames the story around Arthur’s institutionalization at Arkham and the trial awaiting him: the Joker is no longer only a persona performed for an audience, but an identity to be judged in public.
That setup gives the sequel a useful dramatic tension. A courtroom can test what Arthur did and what the Joker means; a musical fantasy can suggest what Arthur wants to believe, or what he cannot say plainly. The film’s central challenge is making those two modes deepen each other rather than compete for attention.
Is Joker: Folie à Deux a musical?
It is reasonable to describe the film as a musical drama: songs and musical performance are central to its design, not a decorative aside. Gaga’s role as music consultant reinforces that intention. The Associated Press also reported the release of the companion album Harlequin around the film’s launch, extending its musical identity beyond the screen.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The more important question is what the songs do. Read as expressions of Arthur’s divided identity and his relationship to the public Joker image, they have a clear purpose. But the courtroom frame promises accumulating pressure—testimony, judgment, and a reckoning with responsibility. When a musical interlude does not noticeably change our understanding of Arthur or the stakes of the trial, it can feel less like a revelation than a detour. That tension is the source of the film’s uneven momentum.
Do Phoenix and Gaga make the musical conceit work?
Phoenix remains the anchor because Arthur’s instability and self-presentation are the story’s main subjects. The role asks him to occupy the gap between a man under institutional control and the figure the world recognizes as Joker. Gaga’s presence makes the musical approach feel integral to the film’s premise, but star power by itself cannot resolve the structural question: whether performance exposes a new layer of character or simply suspends the drama.

The Associated Press called the film theoretically interesting but “curiously dull,” a critic’s assessment rather than a consensus. It captures the frustration of a sequel whose ideas invite attention while its forward motion can feel uncertain. The performances and the concept may hold interest even where the courtroom story and songs do not build into a compelling whole.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who is this sequel for?
Joker: Folie à Deux is most likely to interest viewers drawn to Phoenix and Gaga’s performances, the idea of musical numbers as expressions of a fractured public identity, or a formally unusual continuation of Arthur Fleck’s story. Those looking for a courtroom drama with steadily escalating momentum may find that the songs interrupt more than they illuminate. Phillips has built the musical element into the film’s central argument; the difficulty is that the argument does not always carry the drama along with it.
