Joaquin Phoenix returns as Arthur, with Gaga playing Harley Quinn, also known as Lee. The trailer foregrounds their relationship and performance imagery; it does not establish that the film is solely about Harley.
What happens in the Joker 2 trailer?
The trailer begins with references to Arthur Fleck’s impact on Gotham and follows his meeting with Lee, the woman who becomes his partner in the film’s Joker-and-Harley showmanship. In its closing stage imagery, “Joker & Harley” appears above the pair. ABC News’ July 23, 2024 trailer report transcribes Harley telling Arthur that seeing Joker made her feel less alone, then urging him to give people what they want.
That exchange gives the trailer its central dynamic: Harley is not simply watching Arthur perform. She encourages and joins him in a spectacle built around his public identity. The stage imagery and dialogue are evidence of how the trailer frames their relationship, rather than a complete account of the film’s plot.
Is Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn?
Yes. Gaga plays Harley Quinn, identified in the film’s story as Lee, opposite Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck/Joker. DC’s movies listing features the official film trailer and an interview titled “Lady Gaga on Harley Quinn’s Real-World Influences,” underscoring that her casting and interpretation were central to the film’s promotion.

The official film site sets up the story with Arthur institutionalized at Arkham while awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. It describes him as struggling with his dual identity and finding love alongside the music he has always carried within him. The site credits Todd Phillips as writer, director and producer; Scott Silver and Phillips as screenwriters; and Gaga as music consultant.
Which songs are heard or referenced in the trailer?
ABC News names three song cues associated with the July trailer: “When You’re Smiling (The Whole World Smiles With You),” “For Once in My Life,” and “Get Happy.” These are trailer-referenced songs, not a complete soundtrack listing. The earlier teaser included “What the World Needs Now Is Love,” according to the same report; that alone does not show which trailer best represents the final film.

The music is part of the movie’s premise, not just a decorative trailer choice. Phillips told ABC News, “It’s a movie where music is an essential element. To me that doesn’t veer very far from the first film.” The Associated Press described the picture as a dark, fantastical musical journey and reported that Phillips and Phoenix leaned into the music in Arthur’s head. Gaga told the AP she worked on “untraining” herself and avoiding her usual vocal instincts for the performance.
