Joker: Folie à Deux generated real anticipation before release: Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips returned, Lady Gaga joined the cast, and the film promised an unconventional musical turn for one of DC’s most recognizable characters. But that early buzz was not the same as a positive audience verdict. Looking back at the October 2024 release and the response that followed, the most accurate answer is that the film was audacious and divisive—not broadly embraced.
Why was there buzz around Joker 2?
The sequel reunited Phoenix as Arthur Fleck and Phillips as director, while adding Gaga as Lee Quinzel. The official film site describes Arthur as institutionalized at Arkham and awaiting trial, struggling with his dual identity as he encounters love and music. Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Zazie Beetz also appear. Phillips directed from a screenplay he wrote with Scott Silver, based on DC characters.
That familiar creative team helped, but the film’s most conspicuous hook was its form: a Joker story with songs and imagined musical sequences. Before release, the Associated Press described it as a dark, fantastical musical journey and reported that it was already dividing critics after its festival screening. Phoenix said he and Phillips felt there was more to explore in Arthur; Phillips described the goal as making something audacious rather than delivering fan service. Those comments capture the appeal for some viewers and the risk for others: this was not being presented as a straightforward continuation of the first film.
So, is Joker 2 a musical?
Yes, though not in the conventional sense of characters regularly singing in public as part of ordinary events. Phillips told Variety that many songs work like dialogue: “It’s just Arthur not having the words to say what he wants to say, so he sings them instead.” He said he did not want audiences to expect a conventional street-level musical; many numbers take place in Arthur and Lee’s imaginations.

The songbook includes standards such as “Get Happy,” “For Once in My Life,” and “That’s Life.” Gaga described the creative problem as asking, “We asked ourselves what would need to be true for two people to just break into song in the middle of a conversation?” Variety reported that Phoenix and Gaga performed songs live on camera with an off-camera pianist, and that performances varied from take to take. The musical element was therefore meant to reveal how the characters felt, rather than simply interrupt the drama with polished stage performances.
When did Joker: Folie à Deux come out?
Warner Bros. scheduled the US theatrical release for October 4, 2024, with international release beginning October 2. The release date matters when describing the buzz: the strongest anticipation belonged to the pre-release period, while the audience measures below reflect the opening and later reporting.

Warner Bros. announced that the film would begin streaming on Max on December 13, 2024. That is a historical launch date, not confirmation of current availability; Max catalogs vary by country and change over time.
Did the early buzz match the audience reaction?
No. The film’s release-period indicators were sharply negative despite the attention it drew beforehand. The Associated Press’s October 6, 2024 opening-weekend report gave a studio-estimated US-and-Canada opening of $40 million. AP also reported a D CinemaScore from opening-night ticket buyers and a Rotten Tomatoes score that had fallen from 63% at Venice to 33% by the first theatrical weekend. These are contemporaneous measures from the opening period, not current ratings or a timeless assessment of the film.

The box-office numbers also need their time frames kept separate. TheWrap reported a later worldwide gross of $207 million in 2026. That global total is not comparable to the $40 million domestic opening-weekend estimate: one is a reported worldwide gross accumulated over a theatrical run, while the other is a studio estimate for the US and Canada opening weekend.
Budget reporting was disputed. Some reports put production costs at $190 million and others at $200 million, while Phillips told Variety the $200 million figure was “absurd” and said the film cost less. There is no single agreed budget figure in those reports, so any claim about the film’s financial performance should preserve that uncertainty rather than treat one estimate as settled.

Why did the studio later defend the film?
In a January 2026 interview, Warner Bros. film co-heads Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca said they stood by Folie à Deux. De Luca called it “really revisionist” and suggested that approach may have been too revisionist for a global mainstream audience. He praised Phillips and Silver for not repeating the first film. That defense helps explain the gap between the sequel’s deliberate creative departure and its poor release-period audience response; it does not erase that response or establish a consensus that the film was successful.
What is Harlequin?
Harlequin is a companion album Lady Gaga released alongside the film. It is a separate release, so it should not automatically be described as the film’s soundtrack; album and soundtrack labels depend on the edition and its contents. The album’s connection to the movie is its role as a companion to the film’s music and characters.
