Producers later said they did not know she had died when the music started. After Oliver made the loss clear, they lowered the music; executive producer Jesse Collins said it was turned back on at Oliver’s request.
What happened during John Oliver’s Emmy speech
Oliver was accepting the award for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. He thanked the family’s dog, describing her as an important part of the family who had been with them through major life events. As he spoke, the orchestra started the ceremony’s walk-off music. Variety’s September 16 account describes Oliver then explaining that the family had to say goodbye to her, calling her an amazing dog, and continuing with humor.

Why the producers started the music
The producers’ later explanation was that Oliver’s speech was running long and they initially took his comments as a humorous dog anecdote. Jesse Collins, executive producer of the ceremony, told TheWrap: “We did not know that the dog had passed.”
Executive producer Dionne Harmon described the team’s realization in a September 17 Variety interview: “He was talking about the dog, and we’re like… he’s dead? No! Take the music back, give the dead dog some respect!” Her account captures the shift from treating the remarks as a story to understanding that Oliver was mourning the dog.

What happened to the walk-off music
After Oliver revealed that the dog had died, the producers said they lowered or stopped the music. Collins told TheWrap that the music had been turned off at Oliver’s request and brought back when Oliver said he wanted to be played off. The sequence matters: the music began before the producers understood the loss, and Collins said its return came at Oliver’s request.

Collins apologized to Oliver and his family in his interview with TheWrap: “I apologize to John and his family for playing the music — and the dog,” He acknowledged the awkwardness of playing the walk-off cue during a speech about the family’s loss.
