On March 13, 2024, after Olivia Munn publicly shared that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer the previous year, John Mulaney replied with a message of love and admiration: “Thank you for fighting so hard to be here for us. Malc and I adore you. ❤️”
What did John Mulaney say?
Mulaney’s response came after Munn thanked him publicly for supporting her through treatment and surgeries. Us Weekly quoted his reply: “Thank you for fighting so hard to be here for us. Malc and I adore you. ❤️” The message referred to Munn’s fight to be there for their family, including their son, Malcolm.
Us Weekly’s March 13, 2024 report recorded the exchange and Munn’s account of his support.
What support did Munn describe?
In her March 2024 disclosure, Munn thanked Mulaney for researching her operations and medications and being with her before surgeries and when she woke up. She said he placed framed photos of their young son Malcolm where they would be the first thing she saw after opening her eyes. The Associated Press reported that Munn disclosed a 2023 diagnosis and said she had undergone a double mastectomy.

In a May 16, 2024 ABC News interview, Munn described Mulaney as compassionate and understanding: “He’s honestly just the best human being. He comes to everything in life with so much compassion and understanding.” She also said his humor sometimes led her to ask him to leave the room while she was recovering. ABC News’ interview offers her later account of their experience.
What Munn shared about her diagnosis and treatment
The public exchange followed a personal disclosure, not a new announcement about Munn’s current medical status. The Associated Press reported that she said she was diagnosed in 2023 and had four surgeries over 10 months. It also reported that her double mastectomy took place 30 days after her biopsy. These figures describe Munn’s reported experience; they are not guidance about the timing or suitability of treatment for other people.
In its account of the disclosure, the AP reported that Munn said a genetic test checking 90 cancer genes was negative. A later TIME report, published February 20, 2025, said her doctor used a breast cancer risk assessment score to prompt further testing despite recent clear mammograms and negative genetic testing. TIME reported that her Tyrer-Cuzick assessment estimated her risk at 37 percent. That was a case-specific risk estimate, not a diagnosis or a population statistic.
Risk assessment, imaging and biopsy are distinct parts of the story: a risk score can inform a clinician’s decision about further evaluation, while imaging and biopsy help investigate a possible cancer. Munn’s account concerns decisions made with her own medical team; it should not be read as a universal screening or treatment instruction. TIME’s retrospective report describes the risk assessment in her case.

How the public comments fit together
Munn’s March 2024 post focused on practical and emotional support during a difficult period. Mulaney’s short reply expressed gratitude and affection. In later interviews, Munn expanded on what that support looked like, including his presence around her surgeries and his attempts to use humor during recovery. The exchange is a dated account of how the couple described a personal experience, rather than a clinical account or a statement about Munn’s present health.
