John Mayer’s Call Her Daddy appearance focused on an early relationship and how relationships can inspire songwriting without making a song a one-person biography. What did John Mayer say about his love life?
In the reviewed transcript excerpt, Mayer recalls having one girlfriend in high school. He describes that time as the “truest, most innocent, realest, sweetest” version of himself. He says he reached out to her a few times later, but she was then married with children, and he regarded the relationship as a separate chapter of his life.
The excerpt does not center on revelations about named former partners. Mayer’s recollection is about an early relationship and how he now understands that period.
What did he say about “Your Body Is a Wonderland”?
Mayer says he was not dating anyone when he wrote “Your Body Is a Wonderland.” In his account, the song recalled the feeling of his first girlfriend and being 16, though he wrote it at 21. He also disputes the idea that he had met a celebrity when he wrote it. These are Mayer’s explanations in the interview, not independently verified findings about the song’s origin. The transcript available for review is an excerpt, not a complete transcript. JohnMayer.info transcript excerpt, dated December 21, 2022

How does Mayer think relationships influence songs?
Mayer distinguishes between drawing inspiration from a relationship and writing a song that should be treated as being about a specific person. He put it this way: “I don’t write songs about people. I don’t write songs for people or about people. I might use a relationship that inspires me to write something.”
He says an inspiration can fall away while the song remains. He also avoids telling people that a song is about a particular person, because that can lead listeners to focus on the supposed subject rather than the song itself.
