John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s last known recording together was an informal jam at Record Plant West in Los Angeles on March 28, 1974. McCartney joined Lennon during a session for Harry Nilsson’s Pussy Cats; the group recording later circulated as the bootleg A Toot and a Snore in ’74. It was not a Beatles reunion or a planned duet, and “last” here means the last documented post-breakup studio session the sources identify.
What happened at the March 1974 session?
Lennon was in Los Angeles producing Nilsson’s Pussy Cats. After the main work on March 28, McCartney and Linda McCartney arrived, and Stevie Wonder also visited. An informal group jam followed at Record Plant West. Beatles Bible places it in Studio A and says McCartney played Ringo Starr’s drum kit. Beatles Bible’s account describes Lennon, McCartney, Nilsson, Wonder, Jesse Ed Davis, Bobby Keys, May Pang, Mal Evans, and others among those present.
The gathering was a loose after-hours session, not a formal Lennon–McCartney collaboration. Accounts list attempts at “Little Bitty Pretty One,” “Lucille,” “Sleep Walk,” and “Stand By Me,” followed by a medley led by Wonder: “Cupid,” “Chain Gang,” and “Take This Hammer.” These performances involved a larger group rather than just the two former Beatles.
What is A Toot and a Snore in ’74?
That name is used for the surviving session recording in bootleg circulation. The sources describe it as the only known post-breakup studio session on which Lennon and McCartney recorded together. It is not identified in the available accounts as an official release.

A discography account describes nearly 30 minutes of material, but the boundaries of the recording and the exact credits are not entirely settled. A further reported song has uncertain connection to the session, so bootleg track lists and personnel should not be treated as definitive session documentation. See the Nilsson discography account for its discussion of the recording and those uncertainties.
How did McCartney remember it?
In a recollection published in Club Sandwich in Winter 1994, McCartney said the period was difficult to remember because “it was all a bit crazy and everyone was getting ‘out of it’.” He recalled Lennon saying, “Anything before ’63. I don’t know anything after ’63,” when someone asked what to play. McCartney said the session “wasn’t a very good session,” that he ended up on drums, and: “And no, I don’t have a tape of it.” The Paul McCartney Project also reproduces a shorter version attributed to a 1997 interview, though that transcription contains apparent errors.

May Pang’s memoir Loving John is described as an early source that brought details of the encounter to readers. As with McCartney’s later recollection, it is a participant’s account rather than a definitive studio session sheet.

The date and setting are well established in the cited accounts, but the claim is best phrased as their last known or documented post-breakup studio recording together. That wording reflects what the sources identify; it does not prove that no private recording could ever surface. The surviving performance is also a group jam, so it is more accurate to call it a Lennon–McCartney recording together than a duet.
