Who were John Cena’s best tag team partners? The strongest choices span championship teams, uneasy alliances and one-off matchups—though the evidence does not support calling every name on this list a genuine Cena partner. This is an editorial ranking, not an official WWE list, based on championship significance, story stakes and how memorable each pairing was. WWE’s current profile records Cena as a four-time tag team champion, with two World Tag Team Championship wins and two WWE Tag Team Championship wins; that total does not rank his partners. WWE’s profile says he retired from in-ring competition at the end of 2025, making this a career retrospective.
John Cena’s best tag team partners, ranked
The first seven entries are supported as actual Cena alliances or teams by WWE’s match records and recaps. Kurt Angle and The Undertaker appear in the same documented match as opponents, not as Cena’s partners; they are included only because that match’s unusual combinations help tell the broader tag-team story. That distinction matters: a memorable match pairing is not automatically a partnership.
1. Shawn Michaels
Michaels has the strongest blend of championship significance and dramatic tension. WWE says Cena and Michaels held the tag titles during the period when Michaels was also challenging Cena for the WWE Championship. The team’s appeal came from the contradiction: they had to cooperate in the ring while pursuing individual glory against each other. WWE’s 2012 Raw recap identifies Michaels as one of Cena’s tag-title partnerships.
2. The Rock
Cena and The Rock’s alliance was a major-event story built around two headliners who were hardly natural friends. On November 20, 2011, they defeated The Miz and R-Truth in the main event of Survivor Series; afterward, The Rock attacked Cena with a Rock Bottom. The win made the team memorable, while the immediate betrayal kept it from feeling like a conventional partnership. WWE’s timeline documents the match, and its account of notable alliances also covers the pairing.

3. Batista
Cena and Batista’s tag-title reign lasted about a week, according to WWE, but its brevity is part of the story rather than a reason to dismiss it. The pairing quickly gave way to a clash at SummerSlam. As a team, they were a short-lived combination of two major stars; as a storyline, they were a prelude to a rivalry. WWE recounts the title partnership in its 2012 Raw recap.
4. The Miz
This alliance was an especially awkward one: Cena joined Miz to win the championships from Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel while preparing to challenge Miz for Miz’s WWE Championship at WrestleMania XXVII. A champion and his challenger had reason to distrust each other, yet the tag-title opportunity brought them together. The contrast between practical teamwork and impending conflict earns the pairing a high place. WWE’s recap records the title win and its context.

5. David Otunga
Otunga’s team with Cena belonged to the Nexus storyline. WWE says they won the twin titles together, then Wade Barrett forced them to surrender the championships to Slater and Gabriel. The partnership was less about a lasting bond than about power struggles within a faction, which gives it a clear place in Cena’s tag-title history. WWE’s recap names Otunga among Cena’s championship partners.
6. Brock Lesnar
On SmackDown on October 2, 2003, Cena and Lesnar teamed against Kurt Angle and The Undertaker. WWE’s match page establishes the lineup, making this a striking early-career odd-couple pairing, not a documented championship team. Its distinction is the unlikely combination of Cena and Lesnar on the same side, with two marquee opponents across the ring. WWE’s match record documents the bout.

7. Sting
Cena teamed with Sting against Big Show and Seth Rollins on Raw on September 14, 2015. WWE describes the bout as the main event of Raw’s season premiere. The pairing stands out for the one-night spectacle of two top stars from different generations sharing a side; the cited record establishes the match, not a longer-running team. See WWE’s tag-alliance playlist.
8. Sheamus
On September 17, 2012, Cena teamed with Sheamus against CM Punk and Alberto Del Rio. WWE’s recap supports the match as a documented alliance, but not as evidence of an enduring team. It belongs here as a noteworthy example of Cena being paired with a major rival or counterpart for a specific contest. WWE’s Raw recap records the match.

9. Kurt Angle — an opponent, not a documented partner
Angle is included for the 2003 tag match’s unusual arrangement: he teamed with The Undertaker against Cena and Lesnar. The cited WWE match record does not establish Angle as Cena’s partner. So he is part of the list’s broader tag-team story, but should not be counted as one of Cena’s actual partners on this evidence.
10. The Undertaker — an opponent, not a documented partner
Like Angle, The Undertaker was on the opposing team in the October 2, 2003 match against Cena and Lesnar. WWE’s record documents him as Angle’s teammate, not Cena’s. Including him highlights the match’s memorable lineup, not a proven Cena–Undertaker alliance.

WWE’s records support a qualitative comparison: title wins and reigns give Michaels, Batista, Miz and Otunga a championship case; the Rock pairing has a particularly clear major-event story; and Lesnar, Sting and Sheamus are documented match alliances without evidence here of sustained teams. There is no established comparative statistic in these sources that ranks all of Cena’s tag partners by match count or win rate, so the order is an editorial judgment rather than a numerical leaderboard.
WWE’s 2012 recap described Cena as “four-for-four” in the context of being thrust into unceremonious pairings. That line refers to the selected rival-pairing context in that recap; it is not a measure of every partner or a universal tag-team record.
