John Cena turned heel at WWE Elimination Chamber 2025, attacking Cody Rhodes after Rhodes rejected The Rock’s offer to become “his champion.” The betrayal came moments after Cena won the men’s Chamber match, earning a WrestleMania 41 title match against Rhodes.
How Cena earned the WrestleMania title match
Elimination Chamber took place on March 1, 2025. WWE’s match preview described the men’s Chamber as a six-person contest: two wrestlers began in the ring while four waited in pods. Competitors were eliminated by pinfall or submission, and the last person remaining won the match.
Cena defeated CM Punk to secure the opportunity to challenge Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41. WWE’s official recap says Seth Rollins interfered in the closing stretch, and Cena made Punk pass out in the STF. WWE’s event results and recap and match preview document the match and its stakes.
Why did John Cena attack Cody Rhodes?
After the match, Rhodes entered the ring to congratulate Cena. The Rock and Travis Scott interrupted, and The Rock asked Rhodes to become “his champion.” Rhodes rejected the offer.

Cena then appeared to embrace Rhodes. After receiving a signal from The Rock, he kicked Rhodes below the belt and attacked him. The sequence made the turn especially sharp: Rhodes had just celebrated Cena’s victory, and Cena’s win had put him on course to challenge Rhodes for the title.
Calling the attack a heel turn describes Cena’s villainous actions on screen. WWE characterized Cena as “seemingly aligning” with The Rock, so the moment showed an apparent alliance; it did not establish a formally named faction. WWE’s official results recount the post-match attack.

How the betrayal carried into SmackDown
WWE’s March 5, 2025 follow-up previewed Rhodes’s return to SmackDown by asking how the champion would respond to Cena’s betrayal. That placed the attack within the continuing on-screen story rather than treating it as an isolated incident. WWE’s preview of Rhodes’s return set up that next chapter.

Forbes contributor Blake Oestriecher described the turn as one of the most shocking heel turns in WWE history and read it as a continuation of the developing Rock–Rhodes storyline. That is the writer’s commentary on the scene, not a documented statement of WWE’s backstage creative intent. Oestriecher’s March 1 report offers that independent interpretation.
