On March 4, 2023, the 29th anniversary of John Candy’s death, his children Christopher and Jennifer shared tributes to their father, according to a Yahoo-hosted entertainment report. Candy died of heart failure in 1994, aged 43, as the Associated Press reported. The anniversary post offered a brief expression of love; the family’s later participation in a documentary would provide a fuller account of the father and the life behind the beloved performances.

What Christopher and Jennifer Candy shared in 2023

The Yahoo-hosted report attributed anniversary tributes to siblings Christopher (Chris) and Jennifer (Jen) Candy. It quoted Christopher’s message: “Sending love to my father today. 29 years ago you started a new journey.” The wording should be understood as reported by Yahoo; the original social posts were not independently reviewed for this account.

The message marked the date without attempting to explain the family’s grief in a single caption. For the siblings, remembrance has also meant continuing to speak about their father’s work and the memories fans share with them.

How the siblings have described his continuing legacy

In a 2019 interview with the Canadian Press published by Global News, Jennifer said her father’s work could pass “from generation to generation to generation,” adding that she did not see that slowing because people loved him and his work was timeless. Christopher said, “He’s still very much desirable for people to talk about. He’s still very loved.”

The same report described the ways the siblings stayed connected to their father’s memory, including hearing from fans who recalled meeting him or watching his films. It also said they sometimes marked March 4 with flowers and gathered at places he liked.

Why the family joined John Candy: I Like Me

The family’s participation in the documentary John Candy: I Like Me brought that remembrance into a longer form. The official project site describes a family-supported portrait involving Chris and Jen, their mother Rosemary, interviews, and public and family archival footage. Its stated approach includes both Candy’s humor and the more difficult parts of his life.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the family had declined earlier projects before deciding to take part. A 2019 tribute video and the strong response to it helped change their minds. They wanted a truthful film that included people who actually knew Candy, rather than a version that was simply “too nice.”

Director Colin Hanks also described the children’s role in helping him understand their father in a PBS interview. Hanks recalled Chris observing that his father “took care of everyone but himself.” That is Hanks recounting Chris’s words, not a direct quotation from Chris in the interview.

Remembering him also meant talking about grief

In the AP’s documentary coverage, Christopher described the support his father’s upbringing and example had left the family: “He left, but he did leave us some tools to get through this. That would be through the way he raised us and also saying it’s OK to talk to someone if you have heavy feelings.”

Jennifer has also spoken of revisiting her father through his movies and keeping his DVD collection as a reminder of his voice, as reported by the AP. The documentary’s release was scheduled for Prime Video on October 10, 2025, according to that 2025 report; that historical release notice does not establish its current streaming availability.
