Smallbone plays his father, David, and also co-wrote and co-directed the film with Richard L. Ramsey. The trailer follows David, his pregnant wife Helen, and their seven children as they arrive in the United States with little money, limited prospects, and a family identity built around music and faith.
The film’s central dramatic question is not simply whether the Smallbones can survive a move across the world. It is whether the family’s musical gifts—and the persistence of Helen Smallbone—can help them rebuild a life after the security they knew in Australia disappears.
What the Unsung Hero trailer shows
The official trailer begins with the collapse of David Smallbone’s music enterprise. The family’s relocation is presented as a forced new beginning rather than a carefully planned career opportunity. David and Helen leave Australia with their children and travel to Nashville, Tennessee, hoping to find work and restore the family’s financial stability. The official Lionsgate trailer presents the move through the practical pressures of family life: luggage, uncertainty, a pregnant mother, and seven children who must adapt to an unfamiliar country.
After arriving, the family faces the kind of immediate problems that are often compressed or skipped in music biopics. A trailer-related synopsis depicts David and the children looking for work door to door. The family has to make do with limited resources while David searches for a way to support them. The story’s tension comes from that gap between the family’s former circumstances and its precarious new reality.

Music gradually becomes more than a shared interest. The children’s abilities begin to offer a possible route forward, although the trailer frames that development as part of a family effort rather than an instant shortcut to fame. The movie’s eventual trajectory points toward the careers of Rebecca Smallbone—who became the Christian recording artist Rebecca St. James—and brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone, who later formed the Grammy-winning duo for KING + COUNTRY.
Joel Smallbone plays his own father
Smallbone’s role in the project is unusually personal. He portrays David Smallbone, the father whose decisions drive the family’s move, rather than playing a fictionalized version of himself. He also shares writing and directing credits with Richard L. Ramsey. Daisy Betts plays Helen Smallbone, while Kirrilee Berger portrays Rebecca.
That casting creates a useful distinction between the person telling the story and the character on screen. Unsung Hero is based on the Smallbone family’s history, but it is still a feature-film dramatization. The trailer’s scenes should not automatically be treated as verbatim records of what happened. The film depicts and interprets the family’s experiences for dramatic purposes.
Smallbone and his brother Luke had already told parts of the family story from the stage. In that sense, the movie expands a narrative familiar to the brothers’ concert audience into a feature-length account of the family’s transition from success in Australia to severe hardship in the United States.

A faith-based family drama, not only a music biography
Faith is a defining part of the film’s premise. The official synopsis describes Helen’s faith as a source of strength that encourages David and the children to maintain their own faith while rebuilding their lives. That makes the movie different from a conventional rise-to-fame music biopic: its emphasis is on family responsibility, spiritual conviction, perseverance, and shared purpose as much as on the eventual careers of its musicians.

The story also deals with themes that extend beyond the music industry:
- Economic loss: David’s business failure removes the family’s financial security.
- Immigration and relocation: The Smallbones leave Australia and attempt to establish themselves in Nashville.
- Parenthood: David and Helen must care for a large family while navigating work and housing uncertainty.
- Family teamwork: The children are participants in the family’s adaptation, not merely background figures.
- Music and vocation: The children’s talent becomes part of the family’s possible path out of hardship.
- Faith: Prayer and belief are presented as active sources of resilience rather than incidental details.
Independent parental-guidance material characterizes Unsung Hero as a Christian music biopic focused on perseverance, teamwork, humility, and faith. It lists the film as PG, with thematic elements. Families deciding whether to watch should therefore expect an inspirational faith-centered drama rather than a neutral historical documentary.

How the film connects to Rebecca St. James and for KING + COUNTRY
The trailer uses the family’s early struggles to set up a later musical legacy. Rebecca Smallbone became Rebecca St. James, a Christian recording artist whose career preceded the success of her younger brothers. Joel and Luke Smallbone later became for KING + COUNTRY, one of contemporary Christian music’s prominent sibling acts.
This structure gives the film two timelines of interest. The immediate story concerns a family trying to find work and remain together after a financial collapse. The longer arc concerns how the children’s musical abilities develop within that household. The film’s premise is not that fame solves every problem; rather, it presents the family’s musical careers as emerging from years of instability, discipline, faith, and mutual support.

The memoir behind the movie
Helen Smallbone’s memoir, Behind the Lights: The Extraordinary Adventure of a Mum and Her Family, is a particularly relevant companion to the film. Published by K-LOVE Books and distributed by Simon & Schuster, the book offers Helen’s perspective on the family’s faith, relocation, homeschooling, touring life, and the development of her children’s careers. The publisher describes it as the story of the woman who inspired Unsung Hero.
Reading Behind the Lights alongside the movie can help separate the family’s own account from the choices made in a dramatized screenplay. The memoir is not a substitute for the film, and the film should not be treated as a complete documentary record; they are two different forms of storytelling about the same family experience.
Unsung Hero release and home-viewing options
Unsung Hero opened in U.S. theaters on April 26, 2024. It became available for digital purchase and rental in June 2024, followed by DVD and Blu-ray releases on July 9, 2024. Retailer inventory and pricing can change, so the catalog information for the Unsung Hero DVD is best treated as release information rather than a guarantee of current stock.
Digital and streaming listings have included services such as Prime Video and Peacock-related offerings, but viewing rights vary by country and change over time. Check the current listing in your territory before assuming that a particular platform carries the film. A current, territory-specific streaming placement should not be inferred from an older listing.
The soundtrack
for KING + COUNTRY released Unsung Hero (The Inspired by Soundtrack), a 12-track album with a listed running time of about 37 minutes. The soundtrack includes songs such as “You’re the Voice,” “Place in This World,” “You Make Everything Beautiful,” “Lead Me On,” and “I Surrender All.” The album is available digitally through services including Apple Music; availability of physical editions may differ by store and territory.
The title song, “Unsung Hero,” was released by for KING + COUNTRY before the film. Official artist-channel metadata credits Joel Smallbone, Luke Smallbone, Federico Vindver, and Seth Mosley as its writers. The song extends the movie’s focus beyond the family’s public achievements to the less visible work of parents and relatives whose sacrifices help make those achievements possible.
What makes the trailer notable
The most distinctive element is the distance between the film’s subject and its creator. Smallbone is not promoting an unrelated historical episode or playing a famous musician from another era. He is adapting his own family’s story while taking the role of his father, which gives the project an intimate point of view but also makes careful wording important.
Rank #4
The trailer establishes the broad outline: David’s business fails, the family leaves Australia for Nashville, survival becomes a daily concern, and music eventually helps reveal the children’s direction. The details between those points belong to the movie’s dramatized narrative. Viewers interested in the historical family story should compare the film with Helen Smallbone’s memoir and other first-person or independently documented accounts rather than assuming that every scene occurred exactly as shown.

If you are looking for a faith-based family drama about immigration, financial hardship, parental sacrifice, and the origins of a Christian music family, the film’s premise is a direct fit. It is especially relevant to viewers familiar with Rebecca St. James or for KING + COUNTRY who want the family background behind the artists’ public careers.
It is less suited to viewers expecting a conventional behind-the-scenes music documentary. The film is scripted, acted, and shaped around inspirational dramatic themes. Its value lies in the family’s perspective and emotional arc—not in presenting an exhaustive, scene-by-scene historical record.
