Joel and Benji Madden remain the central creative partnership in Good Charlotte: Joel sings lead and Benji plays guitar and sings. After a seven-year gap following 2018’s Generation Rx, the twin brothers returned with the band’s eighth studio album, Motel Du Cap, on August 8, 2025. Their story connects pop-punk’s changing reputation, time spent building lives beyond the band, and Veeps, the music-entertainment platform that hosts their Artist Friendly conversation with Alternative Press editor in chief Anna Zanes.

Good Charlotte’s 2002 album The Young and the Hopeless marked a breakthrough associated with songs including “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous,” “The Anthem” and “Girls & Boys,” as 1883 Magazine’s 2025 profile of Joel Madden recounts. Rather than reduce the brothers’ careers to a single pop-punk moment, their recent comments frame Good Charlotte as a continuing collaboration that can pause, change and begin a new creative cycle.
Why did Good Charlotte take a break, and what brought the band back?
The band’s previous studio album, Generation Rx, arrived in 2018. Motel Du Cap, the eighth Good Charlotte studio album, followed on August 8, 2025, a seven-year gap later. In an August 2025 interview with GRAMMY.com, the brothers describe their time away as space to live beyond the band, not simply a standard career hiatus. Benji put that distinction plainly: “We love making music — it’s a passion, and it’s our outlet — but that’s not only who we are.”

A family wedding reunion in April 2023 helped turn that interval into a return. The brothers played together at the event, their first gig in nearly four years, and the experience helped prompt them to make another album. Benji described the renewed partnership as familiar but changed by experience: “We still have chemistry, we still have all the things that made us Good Charlotte, but we have a lot more experience, we have a lot more understanding.”
What is Motel Du Cap about?
The title points to Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in the South of France, where the 2023 wedding and reunion took place. In a July 2025 conversation with 1883 Magazine, Joel explained that the band wanted to honor that gathering while imagining a more welcoming, accessible place. He said, “My ideal Motel Du Cap is just a place where everybody can come, be themselves and they have a good experience.”

That idea also connects to how Joel talks about Good Charlotte’s shows: he wants them to be enjoyable for people who would not necessarily call themselves punk or emo. The album’s concept is therefore less about a literal hotel than a sense of welcome and shared experience rooted in the band’s reunion.
A 12-track record with varied collaborators
Motel Du Cap contains 12 tracks and is not presented by the brothers as a record with one narrow sound. GRAMMY.com identifies Luke Borchelt on “Deserve You” and Wiz Khalifa on “Life Is Great,” and reports that the album took shape through collaborators and co-writers. The brothers said they wrote only a few songs that did not make the final track list.

What has Benji Madden said about pop-punk?
Benji’s most direct comment in the material here is a dated one. Speaking to Official Charts in 2014 about pop-punk’s renewed visibility and younger acts such as 5 Seconds of Summer, he said, “They’re a younger us.” He welcomed their use of the sound and recalled that Good Charlotte had once faced criticism as a rock band with pop melodies.
That remark captures Benji’s view at that moment; it is not a current assessment of the genre or a claim that today’s bands share Good Charlotte’s sound or career. It does, however, show how the brothers understood their place in a style that had once made them feel out of step and later became a point of connection with younger listeners.

What does Veeps have to do with the Madden brothers?
Veeps is a music-entertainment platform, and it hosts a 2023 Artist Friendly conversation in which Alternative Press editor in chief Anna Zanes interviewed Joel and Benji. The Veeps listing identifies the conversation as “Alternative Press x Good Charlotte” and categorizes it as rock.
Veeps describes its subscription offering as including concerts and other music programming, along with comedy, documentaries, interviews and backstage footage. Its page displays a price, but subscription terms and prices can change; check Veeps directly for the current offer. A Rolling Stone feature from October 2023 reported that Veeps had shifted from pay-per-view events to a monthly subscription at that time. That is historical product context, not confirmation of today’s pricing or terms.
