Comedian Joe White was born in a Sudanese refugee camp to Ethiopian parents and moved to Perth with his mother and five siblings when he was 11, according to a January 2025 PerthNow interview. He later worked in banking and found stand-up comedy offered a way to share difficult memories. His announced Perth performances were in February 2025; that run has ended.
Who is Joe White?
Joe White is a stand-up comedian whose story, as told in an interview with PerthNow reporter Erick Lopez, spans childhood in Sudan, migration to Western Australia and a career on stage. The profile, published on 10 January 2025, says his Ethiopian parents had him in a Sudanese refugee camp before he moved to Perth at age 11 with his mother and five siblings. The family settled in the northern suburbs.
White’s personal history and career details here are drawn from that interview; the profile is the source for the biographical claims and recollections below. Read Erick Lopez’s PerthNow profile, published 10 January 2025.
What did White recall about arriving in Perth?
White told Lopez that his family had experienced homelessness in Sudan. He recalled that they “lived on the street” and ate from bins to survive. Arriving in Perth brought unfamiliar sights: he said he was frightened by the escalators at the airport because he had never seen one before.

White said that when audiences laughed with him as he spoke about a tough moment, he felt released from it. That is his account of what performing did for him; it does not mean the underlying experiences were easy or erased. It does explain why telling personal stories became part of his relationship with stand-up.
What shows and performances did the 2025 profile mention?
