The case began with Jonas’s Florida filing on September 5, 2023, briefly became a cross-border dispute over where their two children should live, moved through mediation and a temporary shared-custody arrangement, and ended with a confidential settlement.
The public court record documents the legal sequence, but it does not establish a definitive reason the marriage ended, reveal the couple’s permanent custody schedule, or disclose the full terms of their property and support agreement.

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s relationship before the divorce
2016: They begin talking and meet in person

May 1, 2019: Las Vegas wedding
Jonas and Turner married in a private ceremony at a Las Vegas wedding chapel on May 1, 2019, after the Billboard Music Awards. Country duo Dan + Shay performed at the ceremony, according to the AP.
June 2019: Second ceremony in France
About a month later, they held a second wedding ceremony at the Château de Tourreau in France. The two ceremonies are why accounts of the relationship sometimes list both May and June 2019 as wedding milestones; the legal marriage was already established by the Las Vegas ceremony.
2020 and 2022: Births of their daughters
Jonas and Turner welcomed their first daughter, Willa, in 2020, and a second daughter in 2022. The children are dual U.S.-British citizens. Public reporting later identified the younger daughter as Delphine, although the parents have not publicly disclosed many personal details, including exact birth dates.
The children’s citizenship became relevant to the later disagreement about residence and travel, but dual citizenship by itself does not determine custody or establish which country is a child’s legal or habitual residence.

April 2023: Turner says the family planned to make England its permanent home
In a verified petition filed in September 2023, Turner alleged that she and Jonas had mutually decided to make England their permanent residence and had relocated there in April 2023. She described the children as being integrated into life and culture in England. The petition itself records Turner’s allegations; it was not an independent judicial finding that England was ultimately the children’s habitual residence.
August and early September 2023: Work and travel arrangements
Turner’s petition said she was filming in England while Jonas began a Jonas Brothers tour in the United States. Under the arrangement described in her filing, the children traveled with Jonas and a nanny, with Turner expecting to collect them after filming.
Turner alleged that the marital breakdown happened suddenly during this period. Jonas’s representatives disputed aspects of that account and said he had filed after multiple conversations with Turner. Neither account provides a definitive, publicly established cause of the divorce.
September 5, 2023: Jonas files in Florida
Jonas filed a petition to dissolve the marriage in Miami-Dade County, Florida, on September 5, 2023. The petition described the marriage as irretrievably broken, requested joint custody, and said Jonas expected the couple’s prenuptial agreement to be enforced. The filing and its basic terms were reported by the Associated Press.
September 6, 2023: The couple announces the split
Jonas and Turner posted matching public statements saying they had mutually decided to amicably end their marriage. They asked the public to respect their privacy and that of their children, and pushed back against speculative narratives about the breakup.
That statement is the couple’s public description of the decision. It does not explain what caused the marriage to break down.
September 21, 2023: Turner files a Hague Convention-related petition in New York
Turner filed a petition in federal court in New York seeking the return of the children’s passports so they could travel to England. She characterized the children’s continued presence in New York as wrongful retention and invoked the child-abduction provisions of the 1993 Hague Convention. Her petition alleged that England was the children’s habitual residence and that Jonas had not returned their passports.
Jonas’s representatives said that characterization was misleading, maintained that he sought shared parenting, and argued that the children could be raised in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The competing descriptions should be treated as positions taken in a legal dispute, not as established facts. The AP’s contemporaneous report explains the allegations and the response.

September 25, 2023: Interim order restricts removal from New York
According to the subsequent custody filing reported by ABC News, the parents agreed to an interim consent order on September 25. It barred either parent from removing the children from the relevant New York federal-court jurisdictions unless the court later ordered otherwise.
A consent order is an arrangement accepted by the parties and entered by a court. It should not automatically be read as a finding that one parent had abducted the children or that the other parent’s account had been proven.
October 4–7, 2023: Four-day mediation
Jonas and Turner participated in four days of mediation from October 4 through October 7. The process involved mediators from both the United States and the United Kingdom, reflecting the international elements of the dispute.
October 10, 2023: Temporary shared-custody arrangement
On October 10, lawyers filed a second interim consent order establishing a temporary parenting schedule through early January. The order allowed each parent to travel with the children to the United Kingdom or any U.S. state during that parent’s period of care. It also vacated the earlier restriction that had kept the children in New York.

The schedule reported by the Los Angeles Times gave Turner periods from October 9–21, November 2–22, and December 16–January 7. Jonas had periods from October 21–November 2 and November 22–December 16. The order also required a status report about the mediation and proceedings by December 23, 2023.
Because this was an interim arrangement, it was not necessarily the couple’s final custody plan. Its practical significance was that it replaced the earlier New York travel restriction with a scheduled, substantially shared arrangement that permitted international travel.
January 2024: New York petition is dismissed
After the temporary parenting arrangement was in place, Turner requested dismissal of her New York wrongful-retention petition. A judge approved the dismissal in January 2024.
The dismissal allowed the Florida divorce proceeding to continue and reflected the parties’ parenting arrangement. It was not a judicial finding that Turner’s underlying allegations were true or false. In particular, the public record does not support saying that Jonas was found to have abducted the children, or that Turner lost a Hague Convention case after a trial.

March 19, 2024: Florida divorce case is reactivated
Turner’s lawyers asked the Miami-Dade County court to reactivate the Florida divorce case on March 19, 2024, after the temporary custody arrangement expired in January. The filing said the abatement had ended. Public reporting indicated that permanent custody and property issues remained unresolved at that point.
The reactivation was a procedural step that returned the divorce case to active status; it was not the final judgment.
September 6, 2024: Divorce is finalized
A Miami-Dade County judge finalized the divorce on September 6, 2024. Judge Gina Beovides declared the marriage irretrievably broken and approved a confidential agreement between the parties. Reporting based on the judgment and related legal documents says the agreement addressed property, spousal support, and custody of the two daughters. The Los Angeles Times’ account of the finalization provides the broad procedural history; additional reporting based on legal documents describes the settlement as confidential.
The September 6 judgment is the legally decisive endpoint documented in the research record. The settlement’s confidentiality means the public cannot reliably reconstruct every term of the couple’s final parenting, property, or support arrangement.
What the custody dispute was—and what it was not
The 2023 dispute crossed several legal and geographic issues at once:
- Florida divorce: Jonas’s dissolution case was filed in Miami-Dade County.
- New York federal petition: Turner sought the children’s passports and alleged wrongful retention in New York.
- England: Turner alleged that the family had agreed to make England its permanent home and that England was the children’s habitual residence.
- United States and United Kingdom travel: The temporary October order permitted each parent to travel with the children during that parent’s scheduled period.
- Hague Convention: Turner invoked the treaty’s child-abduction provisions, but the petition was later dismissed after the parties reached a temporary parenting arrangement.
It is therefore inaccurate to reduce the episode to a proven abduction or to claim that Turner was defeated in a Hague trial. The publicly documented sequence is a petition, interim restrictions, mediation, a consent parenting order, dismissal, and eventual finalization of the Florida divorce.

The most supportable answer is that the public record does not say. Jonas’s Florida petition used the standard legal description that the marriage was irretrievably broken. The couple’s joint statement described the decision as mutual and amicable. Their later legal filings disputed aspects of where the children were supposed to live and how the travel arrangement had been understood, but those disputes do not establish the cause of the marital breakdown.
Rank #4
No court judgment or verified public source in the research record establishes that any particular allegation involving infidelity, alcohol use, surveillance footage, parenting, or lifestyle differences caused the divorce. Those subjects have appeared in public speculation, but speculation should not be presented as the couple’s confirmed reason for separating.
The confidential settlement also cannot be used to infer a cause. It resolved legal issues; it did not publicly explain the private relationship.
What happened after the divorce?
In interviews reported in 2025, Jonas spoke positively about the former couple’s co-parenting relationship and described Turner as an incredible mother. Those comments provide limited post-divorce context, but they do not reveal the confidential settlement or establish a precise current custody schedule. They were reported by E! News and the Indian Express.
The research record available through August 12, 2026, contains no credible report of a new divorce judgment, a public reversal of the September 6, 2024 finalization, or a publicly disclosed modification that reveals the permanent custody schedule. That does not mean no private changes have occurred; it means the details have not been established in the public sources reviewed.
Sources for the timeline
This timeline separates court-documented events from allegations and public statements. Key sources include the AP report on the Florida filing and relationship history, the AP report on Turner’s New York petition, the ABC News report on mediation and the October temporary order, and the Los Angeles Times retrospective on the final judgment. The verified petition hosted by Courthouse News is useful for identifying Turner’s allegations, but allegations in a filing are not findings by a judge.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s divorce was finalized on September 6, 2024, after a year-long legal process that included competing accounts about the children’s residence, a New York passport petition, mediation, and temporary shared custody.
