Joe Egan, the Scottish singer and songwriter who co-founded Stealers Wheel with Gerry Rafferty, died on 6 July 2024, aged 77. The pair wrote the group’s best-known song, “Stuck in the Middle With You,” before Egan later released two solo albums and stepped away from performing.
Who was Joe Egan?
Egan was a Scottish musician best known for forming Stealers Wheel with his school friend Gerry Rafferty. They met in Paisley, Scotland, and played in local groups including the Mavericks and the Sensors before launching the band in 1972. Egan also sang backing vocals on Rafferty’s 1971 solo album Can I Have My Money Back?, before the two began working as Stealers Wheel. The Guardian’s 2024 obituary recounts Egan’s early musical life and career.
Reflecting on the local scene, Egan said, “It was a great time to be around because the music scene in Paisley was buzzing,” as quoted in Adam Sweeting’s Guardian obituary.
Stealers Wheel and “Stuck in the Middle With You”
Stealers Wheel’s self-titled debut album came out at the end of 1972. Egan and Rafferty co-wrote “Stuck in the Middle With You,” which became the band’s breakthrough in 1973. The Guardian obituary reports that the single reached No. 8 in the UK and No. 6 in the United States. Its appearance in Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 film Reservoir Dogs brought it renewed attention.

The band followed with “Everyone’s Agreed That Everything Will Turn Out Fine” and “Star”; the latter reached the Top 30 on both sides of the Atlantic, according to the obituary. Stealers Wheel released the albums Ferguslie Park and Right or Wrong before the group came apart in 1975 amid tensions and personnel changes. What did Joe Egan do after Stealers Wheel?
Egan released two solo albums: Out of Nowhere in 1979 and Map in 1981. His solo career brought more modest results than Rafferty’s later success as a solo artist. The two musicians worked together again when Egan sang backing vocals on Rafferty’s 1992 album On a Wing & a Prayer; Rafferty’s 1994 album Over My Head also included several compositions by the pair.

Egan eventually left performing and ran the publishing company Baby Bun Music from his home in Renfrewshire. He and Rafferty remained in touch until Rafferty died in 2011, the Guardian obituary reports. Looking back on his decision to pursue music, Egan recalled, “when it became clear that I thought I was better than I actually was, I threw myself headfirst into my music.”

Egan died on 6 July 2024, aged 77. The Guardian obituary gives his birth date as 18 October 1946, while Stealers Wheel’s biography gives 18 October 1949; those published sources conflict on the year. The Guardian reports that he was survived by his wife, Sylvia, and that their daughter Claire had died before him. The cited accounts do not establish a cause or place of death.
