Joe said the operation went very well and that her bones had healed. Reports from that period do not establish her later recovery or current health.
What happened on the golf course
The accident occurred on July 7, 2024, during a round of golf in Cabo San Lucas. At the 10th hole, Michelle was near the tee box doing a headstand and then a split while Joe hit a drive. The ball struck the inside of her right ankle. The couple described it as a “freak accident.”
One contemporary report identified the ball brand as TaylorMade but did not name a model. The available accounts do not describe the incident as intentional or as a normal consequence of play; they present it as an extraordinary mishap.
What injury did Michelle suffer?
Reports described a shattered or fractured right ankle accompanied by damage to the tibial nerve. Michelle said the nerve problem caused continuing difficulty and that attempts to control it with nerve blocks and lidocaine infusions had not worked.

Her reported treatment before surgery
- She wore a hard cast for six weeks.
- She then moved into a walking boot for roughly another two and a half weeks, according to the timeline reported by Golf Digest.
- Nerve blocks and lidocaine infusions were reported as unsuccessful.
Those are details of Michelle’s individual treatment course, not general guidance for people with ankle fractures or nerve injuries.
Why surgery was planned
Michelle said the planned procedure would decompress the tibial nerve—freeing space around it in the hope of improving blood flow and allowing nerve function to return. “We are hoping that this is going to free up some space so I can get some blood flow through my ankle, so that my nerves can start to work and regenerate and I can start to get back to normal,” she said in coverage published around the operation.

The September 11, 2024 operation
Michelle had surgery on September 11, 2024. Joe later described it as nerve decompression and told reporters that it went very well. He also said her bones had healed by then. He acknowledged his distress over the accident, saying, “Needless to say, my guilt is off the charts.”
Joe’s comments were an immediate post-surgery update. They establish how he characterized the operation and her condition at that moment, not the eventual result of rehabilitation or nerve recovery.

What is known about her recovery?
The reports available from September 2024 do not verify whether Michelle made a full recovery, returned to golf or other activities, or continued to experience nerve symptoms. As of September 30, 2026, those sources therefore cannot support a claim about her present health.
