That is the latest reported status—not a cancellation or a renewal. Disney executive Dana Walden described late-night television as a challenging business while praising Kimmel’s work and their relationship. The reporting does not establish whether fans feel sorry for him.
What is known about Jimmy Kimmel’s future at ABC?
On October 1, 2026, The Daily Beast reported that Dana Walden, Disney’s president and chief creative officer, said the future of Jimmy Kimmel Live! was unclear. Kimmel’s contract had not been renewed beyond May 2027, and his team was discussing the show’s status with Disney. The report did not announce a decision about the show’s future. The Daily Beast reported on the ongoing uncertainty.
That distinction matters: a contract not extended beyond a stated date is not, by itself, confirmation that the show will end then. The available report gives no renewal terms, cancellation decision, or final outcome.
Why did Dana Walden call late night a challenging business?
Walden’s comments combined concern about the business with support for Kimmel. She said his ratings were up, but qualified that they were up relative to a smaller audience watching late night on broadcast television. In other words, rising ratings do not necessarily mean the overall broadcast audience—or the business opportunity—is growing.

She also distinguished the reach of online clips from their financial value for a premium talk show. Walden said “millions of people” watch clips on YouTube, but called the platform “not a lucrative opportunity for a very premium talk show.” That “millions” figure is her qualitative description, not a separately established viewer count. No numerical ratings or revenue figures were provided.
Walden described Disney as trying to “make sense of the business while also honoring a deep partnership,” and said, “I love Jimmy.” Her remarks therefore should not be reduced to an announced cancellation rationale: she identified business challenges while also expressing admiration and affection for Kimmel.
What has Kimmel said about late-night budgets and his own future?
At Bloomberg Screentime in October 2025, Kimmel argued that late-night shows could adapt rather than disappear. “I don’t think there’s a reason for these shows to go away,” he said, adding, “These shows don’t need to cost $120 million and somebody will figure it out.” TheWrap reported the $120 million amount as Kimmel’s projected budget for his own show; it was not an independently audited figure or an industry-wide cost estimate. TheWrap reported Kimmel’s comments on late-night economics.

Those remarks offer Kimmel’s view that production budgets can change, but they do not settle the status of his ABC contract. In the same October 2025 reporting, he recalled fearing that the show might not return after its suspension, telling his wife, “This is it. It’s really over.” Asked then whether he would renew the contract that was due to expire in May 2026, he declined to say whether he had decided. That was a different contract period from the later report that there was no renewal beyond May 2027. TheWrap covered Kimmel’s account of the suspension and his then-current contract.

In an interview excerpt published August 7, 2026, Kimmel was asked what it would take to save late-night television. He answered, “A different president would be a good start.” That was a brief response to a broad question about the genre, not a statement about negotiations with ABC. The interview excerpt was published August 7, 2026.
How the 2025 suspension fits into the current uncertainty
ABC announced on September 17, 2025, that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be preempted indefinitely following Kimmel’s comments about Charlie Kirk’s death. ABC News reported that FCC Chairman Brendan Carr had called for Kimmel’s suspension before ABC announced its decision. On September 22, Disney said the show would return on Tuesday after production had been suspended for six days. ABC News reported on the indefinite preemption; Disney’s return announcement was reported September 22, 2025.

The episode helps explain why questions about the show’s security are familiar, but it does not establish what Disney will decide about the contract now. The suspension ended with the show’s return; the later contract discussions are a separate unresolved matter.

The reporting about Walden’s remarks describes Disney’s business outlook and her relationship with Kimmel. It does not present representative survey results or other evidence measuring fan sentiment. So the claim that fans “aren’t feeling sorry” for him should be treated as headline framing, not as a verified finding about viewers.
