Jimmy Kimmel returned to Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 23, 2025, six days after ABC suspended production. In his opening monologue, he addressed the controversy over his comments following Charlie Kirk’s killing. Disney had announced the night before that the show would return, but some local ABC stations initially continued to preempt it.
Why ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel’s show
The suspension followed Kimmel’s comments about the killing of Charlie Kirk and the political responses to it. On September 17, ABC suspended production of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. That same day, FCC Chair Brendan Carr called for the show’s suspension and discussed possible FCC action involving broadcasters that carried it, according to ABC News.
Disney later described its decision as an effort to avoid further inflaming a tense situation. That is the company’s stated rationale, not an independently established account of its motive.
What Kimmel said when he returned
Kimmel addressed the controversy in his September 23 return monologue. He discussed the remarks that had prompted the suspension and the reactions to them. ABC News’ account of the monologue reports its substance; a verbatim quotation is not included here.

What Disney said about bringing the show back
On September 22, Disney announced that the program would return the following night. In a statement reproduced by PBS NewsHour, The Walt Disney Company said: “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.”
The company also said: “We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.” These quotations explain Disney’s public account of the suspension and reinstatement; they do not establish that every local station would air the return.

ABC’s schedule and local station carriage were different
ABC’s decision to put the program back on its schedule did not mean all viewers could watch it on their local ABC station that night. Stations owned by Nexstar and Sinclair initially continued preemptions, so carriage varied by market. On September 26, ABC News reported that both groups announced an end to their preemptions.
This distinction matters: the network determined the show’s return to its schedule, while local affiliates’ decisions affected whether viewers in particular areas saw that broadcast. The announcements ending the preemptions came after Kimmel’s first night back.

What the FCC did—and what remains disputed
Carr’s public comments came before ABC suspended production, and they included discussion of possible FCC action against broadcasters carrying the program. That sequence is part of the public record, but it does not by itself establish the agency’s motive or prove that a particular threat caused Disney’s decision.
A later official FCC response said claims that the agency threatened to revoke broadcast licenses unless Disney fired Kimmel were incorrect. Separately, FCC Commissioner Anna M. Gomez criticized the suspension, calling it “this blatant attempt to silence free speech.” Her statement expressed her view; it was not the same as the agency’s response to the license-threat claim.
