Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman dated for about five years, but reports differ on when their relationship ended: publicists confirmed a breakup report in July 2008, while a later account placed their split in March 2009. The available reporting does not establish whether they reconciled in between or explain why the relationship ended.
When did Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman date?
The exact start date is not established in the sources cited here. By February 2007, Silverman and Kimmel were publicly appearing as a couple: Esquire interviewed them together that month. They joked about relationships and each other; Kimmel’s line, “Our relationship will be stronger after this interview,” was part of the comic exchange, not a formal account of their status.
Later reports described the relationship as lasting about five years. CBS/AP reported that duration in July 2008, and ABC News also described it as five years in 2013. Those accounts support an approximate length, not a precise dating start date.
Why did Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman break up?
The reporting cited here does not give a verified reason for their final separation. ABC News characterized their 2009 split as amicable, but neither that account nor TV Guide’s report supplies a cause. Speculation about private motives would go beyond what those reports establish.

Why do reports give different breakup dates?
Two dates appear in accounts published at different times, and they should not be collapsed into a single definitive date.
- July 14–15, 2008: CBS/AP reported that both publicists confirmed a breakup and said the couple had dated for five years. The Los Angeles Times/AP carried a similar report the next day. CBS/AP’s report and the Los Angeles Times/AP report document the public announcement.
- March 2009: A later TV Guide report, published in October 2009, said they had dated for five years “until March.” ABC News in 2013 likewise referred to their split as occurring in 2009. TV Guide’s account and ABC News’ later description do not explain the intervening period.
The reviewed accounts do not establish whether or when the couple reconciled after the 2008 breakup report. The safest summary is that a breakup was publicly reported in July 2008, while a later account dates the end to March 2009.

What was the Matt Damon video about?
In January 2008, Silverman appeared on Kimmel’s show in a comic music video pretending to confess to an affair with Matt Damon. Kimmel answered with a parody video involving Damon’s friend Ben Affleck. These were staged jokes, not evidence of actual infidelity. In a 2010 Larry King transcript, Silverman was identified as Kimmel’s girlfriend at the time of the Damon video. The CNN transcript revisits the bit in that context.

They were seen together after their relationship ended. In June 2013, ABC News reported that Silverman, Kimmel and his fiancée Molly McNearney caught up and posed together at an AFI tribute. At the time, Silverman described the relationship to ABC with a roller-coaster metaphor, delivered humorously rather than as a literal allegation of mistreatment.

In November 2013, Silverman appeared on Kimmel’s show while promoting her HBO special Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles. The appearance included jokes about their former relationship. Silverman remarked, “People break up and exes are gonna bump into each other. They’re gonna cross paths. They’re gonna be on each other’s talk shows. It’s the cycle of life,” as the Los Angeles Times reported. The Los Angeles Times account describes the on-air reunion. These public encounters show they could share a friendly, comic exchange; they do not establish the details of their private friendship.
