Paris police recovered the bust stolen from Jim Morrison’s grave at Père-Lachaise cemetery in 1988, announcing the discovery in May 2025—37 years later. It was found during a search connected to an unrelated investigation. Reports have not established who took it or whether it was returned to Morrison’s grave.
When was Jim Morrison’s grave bust found?
Paris police announced in May 2025 that the bust had been found, 37 years after it disappeared from Père-Lachaise. The Los Angeles Times reproduced the police announcement: “After 37 years of absence, the bust of Jim Morrison, stolen in 1988 from the Père Lachaise cemetery, has been found!”
The Associated Press reported on May 20, 2025, that police came across the bust during a search related to an unrelated investigation. That account describes an incidental discovery, not a newly launched search specifically for the sculpture.
What was the bust’s connection to Morrison’s grave?
Morrison died in Paris and was buried at Père-Lachaise in 1971. Croatian sculptor Mladen Mikulin made the bust and placed it at the grave in 1981, for the tenth anniversary of Morrison’s death, according to the AP report. It was stolen from the cemetery in 1988.

The AP described the bust as weighing 300 pounds. That figure is the news agency’s reported weight, not an independently documented measurement.
Was the stolen bust returned to the grave?
The reports announcing the recovery did not confirm that the bust was returned to Morrison’s grave. The AP said there was no immediate word on whether it would be placed back there. The City of Paris retrospective also refers to the sculpture’s 37-year absence, but does not establish its later disposition.
