Jim Gordon, the in-demand Los Angeles session drummer who played with Eric Clapton in Derek and the Dominos and was convicted of killing his mother, died March 13, 2023, aged 77, at a prison medical facility in Vacaville, California. His career ranged from recordings with major rock artists to the piano-led coda of “Layla”; his later life was shaped by his 1984 murder conviction and continued imprisonment.
Who was Jim Gordon?
James Beck Gordon was born in Los Angeles on July 14, 1945, and grew up in the San Fernando Valley. He began drumming as a child, played percussion with the Burbank Symphony as a teenager and turned down a UCLA music scholarship to pursue professional work. He later toured and worked with the Everly Brothers; accounts differ on whether his involvement began in 1963 or 1964, so the precise milestone is not clear.
By the 1960s and 1970s, Gordon had become a sought-after Los Angeles session musician and was associated with the Wrecking Crew. He played on recordings by artists including the Beach Boys, George Harrison, John Lennon, Glen Campbell, Carly Simon and Steely Dan. The range of that work is central to understanding his public legacy: Gordon was not known only for the crime that later defined his life.
What was Gordon’s role in “Layla”?
In 1970 Gordon joined Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock and Carl Radle in Derek and the Dominos. The group released Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs that year. Gordon was credited as a songwriter on “Layla” and is especially associated with its piano-led coda. The Guardian recounts that Clapton asked Gordon to use a melody he was playing at the piano.

Rita Coolidge later said she had helped write material incorporated into “Layla” and was not credited for it. That is her claim, reported in accounts of the song’s history; it should not be treated as a settled legal finding. Clapton later recalled the band’s musical chemistry, saying, “I was in absolute awe of these people” and “I’d never felt so musically free before,” as quoted by The Guardian.
Why was Jim Gordon in prison?
On June 3, 1983, Gordon went to his mother Osa Marie Gordon’s home in North Hollywood and killed her. According to police records described by The Washington Post, he struck her with a hammer and then stabbed her with a butcher knife.

At his 1984 trial, psychiatrists testified that Gordon believed his mother controlled him through a voice in his head. Reports discussed his mental illness, including schizophrenia, in the context of the trial and his later life. That account concerns Gordon’s individual circumstances; it does not establish a general link between schizophrenia and violence.
Gordon was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 16 years to life. The Post reported that California law at the time barred insanity as a defense, and that the sentencing judge recognized Gordon’s profound mental illness. Defense attorney Scott Furstman said, “This is not a murder case,” and, “This case is a tragedy,” in remarks reported from the trial. Gordon remained in custody and was denied parole repeatedly, according to the Post.

When did Jim Gordon die, and what was reported about his death?
Gordon died on March 13, 2023, aged 77, at a prison medical facility in Vacaville, California. The Washington Post’s obituary was corrected to give the accurate date and sentence. On the cause of death, the accounts differ in attribution: the Post said the publicist’s announcement gave no cause, while the Los Angeles Times attributed natural causes to the publicist. Neither wording should be mistaken for an independently reported medical determination.
In a 1994 interview with the Post, Gordon reflected on the crime: “When I remember the crime, it’s kind of like a dream.”

How far did Gordon’s drumming reach?
Gordon’s work continued to resonate through sampling as well as his original recordings. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2023 that his drum break on the Incredible Bongo Band’s “Apache” had appeared in more than 750 songs, attributing the count to WhoSampled. That is a reported database count at the time, not a timeless or independently verified total.
