The avatar was not Oliver himself: it was a synthetic recreation made from a photograph and information about him. Oliver’s parents said the project was intended to remember their son and continue his advocacy for preventing gun violence, while critics questioned whether generated speech could fairly represent someone who could not review or correct it.
What happened in Jim Acosta’s interview?
Acosta promoted the segment as a “one of a kind interview.” The Guardian reported that it aired on August 4, 2025, what would have been Oliver’s 25th birthday. Oliver was one of 17 people killed in the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
The animated avatar used a real photograph and spoke with Acosta about Oliver’s death and gun violence, as well as ordinary subjects such as movies and basketball. Joaquin’s father, Manuel Oliver, appeared in the segment and had invited Acosta to interview the avatar. Acosta told him, “I really felt like I was speaking with Joaquin. It’s just a beautiful thing.” That was Acosta’s reaction to the simulation, not evidence that Oliver was present or speaking.
Who made Joaquin Oliver’s AI avatar?
According to The Independent, Manuel Oliver said the avatar was based on a photograph and trained on general information along with material from Joaquin’s writings and social-media posts. The reporting does not identify a vendor, AI model, training method, or production pipeline, so it is not possible to say which technology created the animation or generated its dialogue.

Manuel Oliver acknowledged the distinction between a recreation and his son. “I understand that this is AI,” he said. “I don’t want anyone to think that I am in, some way, trying to bring my son back. Sadly, I can’t, right?” He also described hearing his son’s voice again as meaningful. The family’s approval explains why they chose to participate; it does not turn synthetic speech into an authentic recording or establish that every generated line reflects what Joaquin would have said.
What did the avatar say about gun violence?
The avatar discussed approaches to preventing gun violence. The Independent reported its answer as “a mix of stronger gun control laws, mental health support and community engagement.” The Guardian quoted the avatar saying: “I was taken from this world too soon due to gun violence while at school. It’s important to talk about these issues so we can create a safer future for everyone.”

These are statements generated and delivered by the avatar during the interview. They should not be presented as verified posthumous testimony from Oliver. Manuel Oliver said the family believed Joaquin had left enough writing and public material to represent his views, but the available reporting does not independently verify the avatar’s specific wording.
Why did the AI interview draw criticism?
The central dispute was not simply whether the technology looked or sounded convincing. It was whether presenting a generated version of a dead teenager as an interview subject risks blurring the line between a memorial and a real person’s words.

- Representation: Critics questioned whether anyone can reliably speak for a person who cannot review, approve, or correct newly generated statements. One Guardian commenter argued that journalists could instead interview living survivors and hear their actual words.
- Authenticity and confusion: The Guardian reported concerns that synthetic recreations can make it harder to distinguish authentic recordings from generated material, with possible risks of misinformation, deepfakes, fraud, or scams. These were concerns raised in the debate, not findings that this avatar caused such harm.
- Framing and transparency: Calling the segment an interview can invite viewers to respond to the avatar as though Oliver himself were answering questions. Clear disclosure that it is an AI recreation helps viewers understand what they are seeing, but does not settle the question of whether generated dialogue should be treated as his testimony.
- Family agency and purpose: Oliver’s parents chose the recreation as a way to remember him and continue gun-violence advocacy. Acosta told The Independent he was honored to help the family remember their son. That purpose matters to understanding the family’s decision, even as others may object to the format.
- Control after publication: A family may intend a recreation for a particular memorial or advocacy context; the broader debate includes how synthetic likenesses might be copied, reused, or interpreted beyond that context. The reporting does not establish that this happened to Oliver’s avatar.
The available reports do not provide an empirical study measuring the effects of AI recreations of deceased people, nor a definitive technical assessment of this particular avatar. The ethical concerns are therefore best understood as arguments about representation and potential risk, rather than settled findings about the interview’s impact.

The Acosta segment was not the family’s first use of generated material connected to Joaquin. In February 2024, the Associated Press reported that his recreated voice was part of The Shotline, a campaign in which families used AI-generated messages in the voices of gun-violence victims to contact lawmakers. Six families participated at the campaign’s launch. The AP said recordings were generated from supplied audio, with tone and pattern adjusted based on relatives’ suggestions. Change the Ref and March for Our Lives sponsored the campaign website.
The Guardian also described a separate Arizona case in which an AI version of a homicide victim delivered a victim-impact statement in court. That was a different setting and purpose from a news interview; the cases should not be treated as having identical procedures, legal status, or consent questions.
