Jhund is an emotionally forceful, sometimes unwieldy sports drama: its football sequences deliver momentum and its social setting gives the uplift a harder edge, but its length can blunt that impact. It is best approached as fiction inspired by real work around Slum Soccer—not as a documentary record of Vijay Barse’s life.
What is Jhund about?
Released in 2022, Jhund follows a retired sports teacher who tries to redirect children from a slum by bringing them together as football players. ZEE5 describes the film as based on Vijay Barse’s life and names the character in its synopsis Vijay Borade; those are related but distinct names in the listing, not grounds to treat every plot event as Barse’s biography. ZEE5’s film listing identifies the project as directed by Nagraj Manjule and stars Amitabh Bachchan, Ankush Gedam, Akash Thosar, and Rinku Rajguru.
That distinction matters to the way the film works. Its premise connects football with opportunity and belonging, but the drama is not evidence that specific scenes happened as shown, nor does the available information establish how closely its plot tracks Barse’s life. Read it as an inspired-by drama whose social frame shapes the story, rather than as a factual account.
Does the sports story earn its feel-good appeal?
The film’s strongest dramatic proposition is the change of direction: football offers a shared purpose where the characters’ lives are otherwise constrained by poverty and social exclusion. The sporting energy gives the story forward motion, and the collective effort can be genuinely stirring. The pleasure is less about football as a technical contest than about watching a group find a way to be seen and to act together.

- SAFE AND DURABLE: Made from high-quality plastic, this NFL board game is built to last. It includes small parts, so it's recommended for ages twelve and up.
That uplift is not entirely comfortable, which is to the film’s credit. The social realities around the players make the victories feel conditional rather than magical. Still, the inspirational arc can simplify what it sets out to expose: a team’s progress is emotionally satisfying, but it cannot stand in for a fuller account of the structures that make such intervention necessary. The film is more persuasive when the human stakes remain visible than when momentum alone is asked to carry the social argument.
How do the pacing and length affect the experience?
Jhund is a substantial commitment. ZEE5 lists a runtime of 2 hours 49 minutes, while the British Board of Film Classification gives approximately 176 minutes—slightly longer. The difference is small, but it is worth knowing if you are planning a viewing.

- ANYONE CAN PLAY: 100 Yards was designed for kids, but we have found that is loved by people of all ages. This game is great to keep your young kids up and engaged! 100 Yards is recommended for ages 6+, older kids (and even adults).
- GAME BOX INCLUDES 60 PLAYING CARDS AND 6 GAME PIECES: The 100 Yards Game box has 60 cards for game play, and 6 unique game pieces
- EASY TO LEARN: 100 Yards takes less than 5 minutes to learn. The goal is simple, beat other players to the 100 Yard Line (End Zone). A full game lasts 15 to 20 minutes, but people typically end up playing for much longer, either to rematch or to go for a dynasty. Game play involves simple addition and subtraction with some light strategy.
- FAMILY GAME NIGHT: 100 Yards is the perfect addition for your family game night especially if you have a wide age range of kids from ages 6+ to teenagers. Players and parents can compete against each other, as 100 Yards allows for up to 6 players per game.
- GAME DAY/TAIL GATE: Are you gearing up to watch a Professional or College Football game? 100 Yards will get your entire household in the mood. The game box is portable and can easily be set up for home play or be conveniently carried to other locations.
The length helps the film gather a broad cast and build the team’s emotional arc, yet it also contributes to its unevenness. Rotten Tomatoes excerpted Anupama Chopra’s Film Companion review calling it “Jhund is an unwieldy film but its not a forgettable one.” That tension captures the experience well: the film has memorable drive and feeling, but its momentum does not make every stretch feel necessary. Siddhant Adlakha’s New York Magazine/Vulture review, dated 20 December 2022, described it as “A stylish, propulsive, and resonant tale of frustrations channeled through sport.” These are critical perspectives rather than a guarantee that every viewer will respond alike.
What should viewers know about the content?
The BBFC’s content advice lists strong language, drug misuse, and domestic abuse, including a scene involving threats of violence. Viewers sensitive to those subjects may want to consult the BBFC classification information before watching.

Watch it if you want a socially framed football drama with an earnest, collective emotional payoff and can make room for a long, uneven film. Its energy and resonance are real strengths; its sprawling structure and tendency toward inspirational shorthand are real limits. The result is more affecting than tidy—and worth seeing as drama, not as a documentary account of Barse’s life.
