Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy seemed emotionally distant during the summer of 1999, saying they were “so disconnected.” Her account, relayed by AOL from an interview with PEOPLE, is a personal recollection—not a public statement by either spouse or an independently verified assessment of their marriage.
What “disconnected” meant in Chermayeff’s account
In an AOL report published March 25, 2026, Marina Watts said Chermayeff described a communication breakdown between the couple in their final summer. Reflecting on Memorial Day weekend, when Kennedy had broken his ankle in a paragliding accident, Chermayeff recalled him saying Bessette was “shut down.” She understood him to mean emotionally, and described the pair as shut down from each other and at an important turning point. AOL’s report presents these details as Chermayeff’s memory of the weekend.
Chermayeff also said the couple “hadn’t figured out how to communicate with each other.” That is her interpretation of what she observed and heard, not a finding established by a record from either spouse. The original PEOPLE interview was not independently inspected; the account here is attributed to AOL’s summary.
The pressures surrounding the couple
AOL’s account places Chermayeff’s recollections against several pressures: paparazzi attention, Kennedy’s concern about his cousin Anthony Radziwill’s declining health, and strain connected with Kennedy’s magazine, George. These details provide context for her perspective, but the report does not establish that any one of them caused difficulties in the marriage. AOL’s report attributes this context to the account rather than presenting it as a demonstrated explanation.

What Chermayeff remembered near the end
Chermayeff recalled seeing the couple with friends during the July 4 weekend. She believed that being with friends could help Kennedy avoid confronting unresolved issues with Bessette. She also expressed hope about their future, saying she liked to believe they might have survived as a couple and given the relationship another chance. That is a counterfactual view: no one can know how the marriage would have unfolded.
What is established about the crash
John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and her sister Lauren died in a plane crash off Martha’s Vineyard on July 16, 1999, according to the AOL report. The recollections about the marriage do not explain the crash, and the material cited here does not establish its technical cause. The relationship account and the aviation event are separate matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the account
- Who described the couple as disconnected: Sasha Chermayeff, a friend, in a retrospective recollection reported by AOL from a PEOPLE interview.
- What she was describing: emotional distance and difficulty communicating in the couple’s final summer.
- What the account cannot establish: a definitive assessment of the marriage, the cause of its difficulties, or what would have happened if the couple had lived.
AOL also mentions the FX dramatization Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette. Dramatic scenes in a scripted series should not be treated as independent confirmation of Chermayeff’s memories. The report’s March 2026 statement about Hulu availability is time-bound and does not confirm where the series can be watched now.
