The plaintiffs voluntarily dismissed it in November 2024; the available reporting does not establish the terms or reason for the dismissal.
What did the White Stripes allege?
The complaint said a campaign social-media video posted on August 29, 2024, showed Trump boarding an aircraft and used “Seven Nation Army” as its soundtrack. Its caption referred to departing for Michigan and Wisconsin. The plaintiffs alleged the clip used the song’s recognizable opening riff without their permission or endorsement. These are claims in a complaint, not findings by a court.
The complaint characterized the alleged use this way: “This lawsuit seeks redress for a presidential candidate’s flagrant misappropriation of the musical composition and sound recording Seven Nation Army.” That language reflects the plaintiffs’ position.
As summarized by Justia, the complaint alleged that the video received at least 65,000 views and 700 reposts within a few hours. Those figures were allegations in the filing, not independently verified platform analytics.

Who sued, and what rights did the case involve?
The plaintiffs were John Anthony White, professionally known as Jack White, and Megan Martha White, professionally known as Meg White. They named Donald Trump, Donald J. Trump for President 2024, Inc., and Margo McAtee Martin as defendants.
The complaint treated “Seven Nation Army” as two related but distinct copyrighted works: the musical composition and the sound recording. It asserted direct, contributory, and vicarious infringement claims concerning both. The complaint says Jack White wrote the composition and the White Stripes recorded it in 2003; it lists registrations effective March 29, 2004, for the composition and recording.

Did the campaign have permission to use the song?
The plaintiffs alleged that they had not authorized the use and that the video could suggest an endorsement. The filing does not establish what permissions, if any, the campaign may have claimed; the sources reviewed do not report a court determination on that question.
What happened to the lawsuit?
Jack and Meg White filed the case on September 9, 2024, in the Southern District of New York. Bloomberg Law reported that the plaintiffs voluntarily dismissed it in November 2024. The case therefore did not produce a reported merits decision in the sources reviewed.

The available reporting does not establish whether the dismissal followed a settlement, whether any payment was made, or whether the dismissal was with prejudice. It would be inaccurate to describe the case as a court finding that Trump or the campaign infringed copyright.

“Seven Nation Army” is a White Stripes song from the band’s 2003 album Elephant. On the day the complaint was filed, Pitchfork reported Jack White posted the caption “This machine sues fascists” on Instagram. That was White’s own wording, not a statement by the court.
