John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette married on September 21, 1996, at a small church on Georgia’s Cumberland Island. About 40 guests attended, according to contemporary reporting. A remote setting and discreet arrangements helped keep the ceremony out of public view until after the couple had wed.

Where and when did they marry?

The couple married on Saturday, September 21, 1996, at First African Baptist Church on Cumberland Island, off Georgia’s coast. The Washington Post and TIME described the island as about 18 miles long; the small clapboard church stood at its northern end. The service was a candlelit Roman Catholic ceremony officiated by Rev. Charles J. O’Byrne, a Jesuit priest from New York. The Washington Post and TIME reported the ceremony’s location and details.

Who attended, and who was in the wedding party?

The Washington Post reported an attendance estimate of about 40, attributing the count to the New York Daily News. The Irish Times separately said the church could hold no more than 30 people; that was a reported capacity, not a competing guest count. The Irish Times and The Washington Post give those distinct figures.

Kennedy’s sister Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg was matron of honor, and his cousin Anthony Radziwill was best man. Caroline’s daughters, Rose and Tatiana, served as flower girls, while her son Jack carried the rings, according to the Post.

What did the couple wear?

Bessette wore a pearl-colored, bias-cut silk crepe dress designed by Narciso Rodriguez for Cerruti 1881, according to the Los Angeles Times. The report also describes a silk tulle veil and crystal-beaded silk satin sandals. The Los Angeles Times published those details in November 1996.

TIME reported that she wore long white gloves and carried a small bouquet of lilies of the valley. Kennedy wore a blue or midnight-blue suit; the Washington Post said he wore his father’s watch. These accessories and clothing details come from contemporary accounts, rather than a complete official record of the outfits.

How did they keep the wedding secret?

Cumberland Island’s isolation gave the couple a discreet setting. In 1996, the Washington Post described access by ferry, a National Park Service limit of up to 300 tourists ferried per day, and restrictions on motor vehicles, which were limited to residents and park rangers. TIME also described boat or small-plane access, unpaved roads, and few vehicles. These are period descriptions, not current travel or access guidance.

TIME reported that Mary Jo Ferguson requested a National Park Service permit for a wedding ceremony in July, and described confidential marriage-license arrangements with local officials and security near the church on the wedding evening. The Post reported that Kennedy told colleagues at George he was going out of the country, while even close friends did not know about the wedding. These accounts describe specific reported precautions; they do not establish the scope of a comprehensive security operation.

In a statement the day after the ceremony, Kennedy explained the couple’s preference for privacy: “It was important for us to be able to conduct this in a private, prayerful and meaningful way with the people we love,” he told Ann Gerhart of the Washington Post.

Where did the guests gather afterward?

The wedding festivities, including the rehearsal dinner and reception, took place at Greyfield Inn, a Carnegie family mansion converted into an inn. The Washington Post reported that a restaurant from Fernandina Beach catered the reception; the Irish Times said capon was served. Those menu and catering details are outlet-specific accounts, while the inn as the gathering place is reported by both TIME and the Post.

At the Friday rehearsal dinner, Kennedy toasted Bessette, saying, “I am the happiest man alive,” according to the Washington Post. The paper also quoted Sen. Edward Kennedy in a prepared statement: “This is a time of special joy for all of us.” Patrick J. Kennedy’s confirmation came the following day: “My cousin John did tie the knot yesterday,” he said in an Associated Press report republished by the Los Angeles Times.

What contemporary reports establish—and what they do not

The key outline is consistent across 1996 coverage: the couple married on Cumberland Island at First African Baptist Church, and Greyfield Inn hosted the festivities. Other specifics—including the exact attendance, menu, and some secrecy arrangements—were reported with varying attributions and should be read as contemporaneous journalism, not as a complete private archive of the wedding.

The Los Angeles Times also published period prices in November 1996: a round-trip ferry ticket was reported at $10.07, and Greyfield Inn rates at $145–$350 a night. These are historical figures only, not current costs. Current ferry schedules, prices, and visitor rules are not established by those reports.
