Who was Jesse Colin Young?
Born in Queens, New York, in 1941, Young was an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He released two solo albums before forming The Youngbloods with Jerry Corbitt. The group’s self-titled debut appeared in 1967. Young’s official biography
Young played bass and became the band’s frontman. After Corbitt left during the recording of Elephant Mountain, Young became the group’s principal songwriter. His songs for the band included “Darkness Darkness” and “Sunlight.” Official biography
What made “Get Together” famous?
The Youngbloods first released “Get Together” on their 1967 debut album. Young sang the song, but did not write it: its author was Chet Powers, who later performed under the name Dino Valenti. How did the Youngbloods’ singer die?
Young died at home in Aiken, South Carolina, on March 16, 2025, according to his funeral home obituary. He was 83. Published accounts differ on the cause: the Los Angeles Times reported that publicist Michael Jensen confirmed a heart attack, while KQED/NPR said no cause of death was given. His official biography says Young’s family returned from Hawaii to the continental United States in 2006, and that a Lyme disease diagnosis later kept him from touring for a period. Shortly before Young’s death, he had written an autobiography, was working on a children’s book, and had completed work on a song for Future Youth Records, the Los Angeles Times reported.
