“It really changed my life, being in Stand by Me,” Jerry O’Connell said in a 2021 anniversary interview. The 1986 film was an early screen role for the actor, who played Vern Tessio, and it has remained a touchstone in his reflections on growing up on set alongside River Phoenix and the rest of the young cast.
Why Stand by Me mattered to Jerry O’Connell
O’Connell’s remark is direct, but it does not mean the film alone determined the course of his career. It captures the importance he has attached to taking part in a movie that became a lasting story about childhood, friendship and the passage into adulthood. In Entertainment Tonight’s 2021 anniversary interview, he described the experience as life-changing: “It really changed my life, being in Stand by Me.” Entertainment Tonight’s 2021 interview revisited the film with O’Connell and Corey Feldman.

Directed by Rob Reiner and released by Columbia Pictures in 1986, Stand by Me was adapted from Stephen King’s novella The Body. Its four young leads—Wil Wheaton as Gordie Lachance, River Phoenix as Chris Chambers, Corey Feldman as Teddy Duchamp and O’Connell as Vern Tessio—set out to find the body of a missing teenager. The journey gives the film its adventure, while the boys’ friendships and difficult home lives give it its emotional weight. Sony Pictures’ official film page identifies the characters and outlines the premise.
O’Connell’s memories of River Phoenix
O’Connell and Phoenix shared the experience of playing boys whose friendship is central to the story. Later interviews and anniversary coverage have returned to the young cast’s connections and to Phoenix’s place in their memories. The Associated Press’s March 25, 2026 anniversary report revisits those recollections alongside the surviving cast’s reflections on Reiner’s direction. The AP report also notes that Phoenix died in 1993.

#1 Best Overall
- Four young friends find the remains of a missing teenager in this first-rate adaptation of Stephen King's The Body. Starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell and Kiefer Sutherland. Directed by Rob Reiner.
The lasting connection is not only a matter of remembering a co-star who died young. Phoenix played Chris as a boy shaped by other people’s assumptions about his family, but also as a friend whose loyalty and vulnerability matter to the group. That role remains part of what made the film—and the shared work of its young cast—significant to viewers and to those who made it. O’Connell’s reflection belongs to that broader memory of a formative production, rather than serving as evidence for a specific unverified anecdote about Phoenix.

Anniversary conversations can make an old film feel newly personal: the actors are looking back not just at a finished movie, but at the young people they were while making it. In 2026, coverage of the film’s 40th anniversary brought together memories of Phoenix, Reiner and the surviving cast. Wheaton, who played Gordie, described Reiner’s work with the young actors this way: “Rob took the time to really reach us and help us make authentic emotional connections to what our characters were experiencing,” according to the AP.

That account helps explain why Stand by Me can be both a career milestone and a shared coming-of-age memory for its cast. The film gave O’Connell an early role in a story that has endured, while his own concise description—“It really changed my life”—states what he has said about its personal significance. It is a meaningful reflection, not a claim that one film accounts for everything that followed in his life or career.
