The article said this was higher than an earlier estimate of about $6 million attributed to Garcia’s widow, Deborah Koons Garcia. What was included in the reported valuation?
The Chronicle said about $4.6 million of the valuation represented future artist, merchandising, and songwriting royalties. That was the reported value assigned to those future rights within the estate valuation—not an annual royalty figure and not an amount to add to the $9,936,492 total.
The article also described homes in Nicasio and San Rafael and a half-interest in some Mendocino County property. These were details associated with the estate report; the article does not provide separate values for them that should be stacked on top of the total.

Why do some accounts mention more than $34.6 million?
That figure refers to claims reported as filed against the estate by January 19, 1996, not to the estate’s value or a final court judgment. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that claimants sought more than $34.6 million. A separate SFGATE report on January 23 said the estate’s attorney argued that the estate did not have enough money to pay the claims then filed. Those reports describe a contentious stage of probate; they do not establish that every claim was allowed or paid, and the claims figure cannot be subtracted mechanically from the later valuation.

What did Garcia’s will say, and what can’t it tell us?
In August 1995, the Chronicle reported that a will filed in Marin County Superior Court left nearly all Garcia’s possessions and one-third of the rest of his estate to his wife, Deborah Koons Garcia. The report also said the original will was sealed at the request of Garcia’s attorney. Is $9.9 million Jerry Garcia’s net worth today?
No current net-worth figure follows from the probate valuation. It is a dated estate figure reported in 1997, and the available reporting does not provide a current estate accounting or ongoing-income total. Continued availability of Garcia’s music cannot by itself establish the value of current assets or royalties.
