In January and February 2025, different Jewish leaders and organizations responded to Elon Musk’s inauguration gesture and later Nazi-related jokes with different demands: some criticized his conduct, 15 Jewish organizations said they would stop posting on X, and signatories to a separate campaign letter urged advertisers and app-store operators to act. The gesture’s meaning was disputed, and these announcements did not represent a single, unified Jewish response.
What happened, and when?
January 20: A disputed gesture
At a Trump inauguration event on January 20, 2025, Musk made an arm gesture that some Jewish leaders and other observers characterized as a Nazi salute. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) described it instead as an awkward gesture and urged people to give one another grace and the benefit of the doubt. The accounts establish that interpretations differed; they do not establish Musk’s intent. Axios reported on the groups’ response, and The Washington Post covered the separate campaign letter.
January 23: Holocaust-related jokes
Days later, Musk posted Nazi-related jokes on X, including puns referring to Nazi figures. ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt condemned making light of the Holocaust, saying: “We’ve said it hundreds of times before and we will say it again: the Holocaust was a singularly evil event, and it is inappropriate and offensive to make light of it.” He also addressed Musk directly: “However you feel about the accusations being made against you, this is absolutely the wrong response.” JTA reported Greenblatt’s response.
What did the 15 Jewish organizations announce?
On January 27–28, a coalition of 15 U.S. and Canadian Jewish organizations announced plans to stop posting and end engagement on X by the first quarter of 2025. Axios named the Union for Reform Judaism, American Conference of Cantors, Central Conference of American Rabbis, Reform Jewish Community of Canada, and Shalom Center among the signatories.

The coalition statement said: “In study after study, as well as our lived experiences, X has become a platform that promotes hate, antisemitism, and societal division.” It also asserted: “Under the leadership of Elon Musk, X has reduced content moderation, promoted white supremacists, and re-platformed purveyors of conspiracy theories.” Some organizations said they would retain accounts to prevent others from taking over their handles; retaining an account did not necessarily mean continuing to post or engage.
What did X Out Hate ask advertisers and app stores to do?
A separate effort, X Out Hate, pursued commercial pressure rather than a coalition-wide organizational exit. On February 4, 2025, The Washington Post reported that more than 160 Jewish leaders, including dozens of rabbis and mostly left-leaning activists, backed a campaign letter. It urged advertisers—including Google, Amazon, and the ADL—to pull ads from X, and asked Apple and Google to remove the platform from their app stores.

The letter’s signatories wrote: “When the world’s richest man combines political power with a platform that can mobilize hate, the danger becomes immediate and lethal.” The Post reported that the ADL had already paused its X ad buys the previous fall, while continuing to post on the platform. That distinction matters: the letter asked the ADL to take an advertising action it said it had already taken, not to leave X entirely.

The announcements came from different people and organizations, called for different actions, and followed different events. The ADL initially gave Musk the benefit of the doubt over the gesture, then condemned his Holocaust-related jokes. The 15-organization coalition announced a plan to stop posting and disengage. X Out Hate signatories called for advertisers and app stores to exert pressure. Those positions can coexist without constituting a single community-wide decision.

The reported counts describe those announcements and signatories, not the views of Jewish people as a whole. The cited reporting does not provide a poll or estimate of how many Jewish people supported a boycott. It also documents stated plans and requests in early 2025, not whether each plan was completed or the campaign’s status today.
