Page Six reported that playwright and screenwriter Jeremy O. Harris confronted OpenAI CEO Sam Altman at a Vanity Fair after-Oscars party over OpenAI’s reported agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense. The account, repeated by Futurism on March 18, 2026, says Harris initially compared Altman to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels, then told Page Six that he had meant German industrialist Friedrich Flick after drinking too many martinis. Sources cited by Page Six reportedly described Altman’s response as calm.

The encounter has not been independently established by a public recording, a named eyewitness, or a direct account from Altman. It should therefore be treated as an attributed report, not a confirmed event.

What was reportedly said at the party?

According to Page Six’s March 17 report, Harris approached Altman at Vanity Fair’s after-Oscars gathering and criticized him over OpenAI’s Pentagon relationship. Page Six’s account says Harris called Altman the “Goebbels of the Trump administration.”

Harris later emailed Page Six to say that he had been drinking and had used the wrong historical comparison. He said the person he intended to reference was Friedrich Flick, not Joseph Goebbels. That distinction matters: the reported exchange involved a political and historical analogy, not a literal allegation that Altman was a Nazi member or a convicted war criminal.

Who is Jeremy O. Harris?

Harris is a playwright and screenwriter best known for Slave Play, which won a Tony Award, and as a co-writer of the film Zola. His prominence in theater and film helps explain why an alleged confrontation at a high-profile Hollywood party drew attention. Nothing in the reporting indicates that he was speaking for the film industry or for other guests.

Goebbels and Flick were not the same historical figure

Joseph Goebbels

Goebbels was Nazi Germany’s propaganda minister and one of Adolf Hitler’s senior officials.

Friedrich Flick

Flick was a German industrialist whose wartime business empire supplied the Nazi regime. He was convicted of war crimes at the Nuremberg Trials in a case involving the use of forced labor.

Harris’s reported correction changed the historical reference, but it did not turn the allegation into independently verified evidence about Altman or OpenAI.

Why was the Pentagon agreement the flashpoint?

Futurism described OpenAI as announcing an agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense in late February 2026 to deploy its AI systems across the military. The cited coverage does not provide the contract, dollar value, procurement vehicle, deployment schedule, or a detailed list of applications.

“Pentagon deal” can describe several materially different arrangements. A commercial partnership, a government procurement contract, and deployment in military environments are not automatically the same thing. Nor does the phrase by itself establish use in intelligence, logistics, administration, cybersecurity, weapons systems, or autonomous operations.

What guardrails were reportedly included?

Futurism said OpenAI later updated its description of the agreement to emphasize restrictions on:

Those statements are a reported description, not a substitute for the agreement’s actual language. The public account does not answer whether the restrictions were contractual terms, company policies, or public assurances; whether they covered every military use; who would enforce them; or whether the arrangement included audit, monitoring, or termination provisions. It also does not define how “human in the loop” would work operationally.

How Anthropic and OpenAI’s employees reportedly responded

The coverage contrasted OpenAI’s reported arrangement with Anthropic’s reported refusal to accept unrestricted military access to its systems. It also said the administration threatened Anthropic, including with possible seizure of its technology. Those claims require attribution and should not be treated as settled findings without the underlying official statements.

Futurism separately reported that Altman apologized publicly for the agreement being “rushed,” defended military collaboration at an internal all-hands meeting, and that OpenAI executive Caitlin Kalinowski later left the company while criticizing the deal’s insufficiently defined guardrails. These are separate developments. The available reporting does not establish that the party confrontation caused Kalinowski’s departure.

Timeline of the reported controversy

  1. Late February 2026: OpenAI reportedly announced an agreement with the Defense Department.
  2. After the announcement: Public criticism and debate over military safeguards followed.
  3. Subsequently: Altman reportedly apologized for the agreement being rushed and defended defense work internally.
  4. Later: Kalinowski was reported to have left while objecting to the guardrails.
  5. After the Oscars: Page Six reported the alleged Harris–Altman confrontation at Vanity Fair’s party.
  6. March 18, 2026: Futurism published its account, principally citing Page Six.

What remains unconfirmed

  • No public video or audio recording is identified in the cited coverage.
  • No named eyewitness independently corroborates the exchange.
  • Altman’s own public account of the encounter is not provided.
  • Vanity Fair’s response is not provided.
  • The primary Pentagon contract or Defense Department procurement document is not linked in the cited article.
  • The reporting does not establish that the agreement authorized autonomous weapons, unrestricted military access, or mass surveillance.
  • It does not establish a causal link between the party incident and any OpenAI executive departure.

Bottom line on the Oscars-party story

The defensible account is narrow: Page Six reported that Jeremy O. Harris confronted Sam Altman at a Vanity Fair after-Oscars party over OpenAI’s Pentagon agreement, initially invoking Goebbels and later saying he meant Friedrich Flick. Sources cited by Page Six described Altman as calm. The incident is newsworthy because it placed a dispute over military AI in a celebrity setting, but the confrontation remains a sourced allegation rather than a fully independently documented event.
