Jennifer Love Hewitt’s “Criminal Minds” reunion on 9-1-1 happened in the Season 5 episode “Boston,” which aired in the story’s 2022 context—not as a new 2026 casting announcement. A.J. Cook, Hewitt’s former Criminal Minds colleague, guest-starred as Kira. The reunion was between the actors and their fan communities, not a crossover between the two shows.
What happened in “Boston”
TV Insider identified “Boston” as 9-1-1 Season 5, Episode 12 in its March 28, 2022 interview with Hewitt. In the episode, Maddie reconnects with Chimney in Boston, where Kira, played by Cook, needs medical assistance.
Spoiler warning: The episode also deals with Maddie’s serious mental-health crisis and her return to her family. That storyline is part of the fictional drama; it should not be treated as medical guidance.
Why Cook’s appearance was a reunion
Hewitt said that 9-1-1 showrunner Tim Minear called to ask what she thought about bringing Cook into the episode. The two had previously worked together on Criminal Minds. Hewitt described a role reversal: Cook had been a long-standing cast member when Hewitt joined that series, while Cook was now visiting the show where Hewitt had already spent several years.

Hewitt anticipated that fans would recognize the connection in the actors’ first scene. “She had a blast and did a great job and it was really fun and we knew the entire time that there’s gonna be, our whole first scene, probably a gasp between Criminal Minds and 9-1-1 fans who will be like, ‘Yes! The worlds collided. This is awesome.’”
Two reunions, one episode
- In the story: Maddie and Chimney reconnect in Boston.
- Behind the scenes: Hewitt and Cook share a reunion rooted in their earlier work on Criminal Minds.
The second connection is why the episode was framed as a “Criminal Minds” reunion. It does not mean the fictional worlds crossed over.

Hewitt’s current status on “9-1-1”
ABC’s series page, checked October 8, 2026, still lists Hewitt as Maddie and gives October 15, 2026 as the Season 10 premiere date. ABC’s biography also lists her earlier Criminal Minds role. Those current listings establish her continuing place in the series, but they do not turn the 2022 “Boston” story into a newly announced return.
