Jennifer Lopez endorsed Kamala Harris for president at a Las Vegas rally on October 31, 2024, saying, “Our pain matters. We matter. You matter. Your voice and your vote matters.” Her remarks connected her Puerto Rican heritage and American identity to a response to a joke about Puerto Rico at a Donald Trump rally.
What did Jennifer Lopez say at the Las Vegas rally?
Lopez appeared at the Harris campaign rally on October 31, 2024. In her address, she said she would vote for Harris and urged people to vote, linking participation to having a voice. CNN’s transcript records her saying, “I will be casting my ballot for Kamala Harris for president of the United States proudly.” She then introduced Harris. CNN’s transcript of Lopez’s remarks preserves the speech and introduction; The Guardian’s Reuters-sourced report identifies the event’s date and location.
Lopez also told the crowd, “This is our country, too. And we, we must exercise our right to vote on November 5th.” That date was part of her appeal at the 2024 rally, not current voter guidance.
Why did Lopez connect the speech to Puerto Rico?
Lopez addressed the controversy over comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s joke about Puerto Rico at Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally. The joke was Hinchcliffe’s remark at the event; it should not be attributed to Trump. Lopez said the remarks had offended Puerto Ricans and Latinos, and she answered by speaking from her own Puerto Rican heritage and American identity. In the CNN transcript, Lopez said, “I am Puerto Rican, (speaking in foreign language), and yes, I was born here and we are Americans.” She followed that identity framing with the line, “This is our country, too.” Her words framed the insult as an affront to people whose heritage and belonging in the United States mattered to her.
