Peloton instructor Jess King said she told her team about her relationship with singer-songwriter Sophia Urista before telling friends or family. She worried about whether she would fit in and whether dating a woman could affect her career, but recalled that her colleagues supported her. King has described her identity in her own fluid terms rather than claiming one fixed label.
How Jess King and Sophia Urista’s relationship began
In a 2021 interview with Shape, King said she had not previously pursued a relationship with a woman when she met Urista performing at The Box, a cabaret-style venue in New York City. They grew closer over the following year. After Urista became single and later returned from temporary work in Helsinki, the two arranged to meet.
Why King told her Peloton team first
Before telling friends or family, King shared the relationship with her Peloton team. She had wondered whether she would fit in and whether being in a same-sex relationship might affect her success on the platform. In a separate 2021 interview with The Advocate, she recalled asking her boss, “Hey, I’m dating a woman. Is that a problem?” She said the response was, “Not for us. How do you feel about it?”
How her parents responded
King said telling her mother was difficult at first. Her mother thought the relationship might be a phase and said it was not her dream for King. King then told her father, who was initially surprised but supported her. About a week later, her mother met Urista, saw that King was happy, and accepted the relationship. This is King’s account of her family’s response, not a prediction of how another family will react.

How King describes her identity
King has not presented herself as belonging to one definitive identity label. In her 2021 Shape interview, she said: “When somebody says, ‘are you gay, are you lesbian, are you bisexual?’ I’m like, I’m all of that — I’m whatever you want it to be. I’m just free.”
She also explained why visibility matters to her: “I do feel it’s important that I take a stand for my love,” she told Shape. The distinction matters: King’s own description is fluid and self-directed, rather than a specific label assigned by others.

From engagement-era coverage to family life
The 2021 Advocate interview described King and Urista as engaged. A June 9, 2026 interview with The Bump refers to Urista as King’s wife and describes the couple raising two children. The later description updates the relationship status reported in the earlier coverage.

In 2021, King told The Advocate that she speaks about her partner and queer community in her classes and on social media throughout the year, rather than only during Pride Month. In 2026, she described Pride as a year-round way of being. “Pride isn’t a season for me. It’s a way of being,” she told The Bump.
