In a September 6, 2024 interview with MobileSyrup, Jennifer Hale connected three parts of her career: returning as Jean Grey and Madelyne Pryor in X-Men ’97, her long relationship with Canadian creators, and her demand that synthetic voices be governed by “control, consent and compensation.” The conversation is best read as a dated profile of Hale’s views during the 2024 video-game performers’ strike—not as a current report on labor contracts or AI forecasts.
A career that crosses Marvel and modern games
Hale is one of the most recognizable performers in games and animation. Her official roles list includes female Commander Shepard in Mass Effect, Bastila Shan in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Naomi Hunter in Metal Gear, Ashe in Overwatch, Rivet in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Felicia Hardy/Black Cat in Spider-Man: The Animated Series. The interview and Hale’s biographical materials also associate her with a Guinness record for prolific female video-game voice acting; that wording should be treated as an attributed biographical claim, not an independently verified current record.
That range explains why X-Men ’97 was more than another casting credit. Hale returned to the character she had played in the original animated era while also voicing Jean’s clone, Madelyne Pryor, including Pryor’s Goblin Queen persona.
Why Jean Grey still mattered
Hale said she would play Jean “anytime, anywhere.” Her enthusiasm was rooted in the production’s respect for X-Men: The Animated Series. In her account, the writers understood the earlier show and treated its history as something to build on rather than disposable nostalgia. Catherine Disher, the original Jean Grey voice, returned too—this time as Dr. Valerie Cooper—creating a direct link between the two generations.

Hale’s performance therefore was not simply a recasting exercise. The new series gave her a heroic Jean and a dramatically different, more theatrical Madelyne, while preserving the emotional continuity that longtime viewers recognized. That is Hale’s interpretation of the show’s achievement, not a claim that the revival objectively surpasses its predecessor.
From Black Cat to the animated Marvel legacy
Hale also recalled voicing Black Cat in Spider-Man: The Animated Series. She enjoyed seeing X-Men ’97 acknowledge the wider animated Marvel history, including Peter Parker appearances. Her wish to see Jean meet Black Cat is an amusing piece of self-reference: Hale supplied the voices for both characters.
She remembered the 1990s Marvel production culture and her encounters with Stan Lee as part of a bridge between that era and today’s revival. Those memories are personal recollections, not confirmation of a new Spider-Man revival.

Why Canada figures so prominently
During the pandemic, Hale moved from Los Angeles to Vancouver and recorded from a home studio. She described feeling more seen and supported there, including as a parent, and said the move reconnected her with her Canadian identity. She also argued that Canadian creators often make major contributions without the aggressive self-promotion common in U.S. entertainment.
Her examples make “Canadian talent” more concrete than a patriotic slogan:
- BioWare Edmonton: the studio behind Mass Effect, where Hale played female Commander Shepard.
- The Long Dark and Hinterland: a Vancouver-linked survival game associated with director Raphael van Lierop.
- David Hayter: the Canadian actor and writer who worked with Hale on projects including Spider-Man and Metal Gear.
- Sam Maggs: the Canadian writer connected with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, in which Hale voiced Rivet.
- Catherine Disher: the original Jean Grey performer who appears in X-Men ’97 as Dr. Valerie Cooper.
Hale attributed Canadian creative culture to inclusion, empathy, collaboration and public support for creative and Indigenous businesses. Those are her observations, not universal facts about either country. “Canadian talent” can mean a person’s nationality, a studio’s location, a production company or public financing; those categories are not interchangeable.

AI is acceptable only with agency
Hale did not describe herself as opposed to technology. Her objection is to taking a performer’s voice without permission or using a licensed model beyond the agreed purpose. Her framework is threefold:
- Control: the performer decides where and how the voice can be used.
- Consent: the voice is licensed rather than copied or harvested without authorization.
- Compensation: the performer is paid when the digital voice is used, including repeat or expanded uses where the agreement requires it.
The distinctions matter. An actor might approve a digital replica for one game, character or client without granting blanket rights for every future project. “AI voice” can describe a licensed replica, voice conversion, synthetic speech or a wholly artificial voice; the ethical question is who authorized the use and who benefits from it.
Why working actors are exposed
Hale’s argument is economic as much as artistic. Working actors may audition repeatedly and book relatively few jobs. A day rate can sound substantial when isolated from the irregularity of employment, but it does not guarantee a stable annual income. Unauthorized replication could remove future opportunities while leaving the performer with no control over their likeness or voice—an especially serious risk for people supporting children or households.

The interview took place amid the 2024 SAG-AFTRA video-game performers’ strike, which involved voice, performance-capture and motion-capture actors and placed enforceable AI protections at the center of the dispute. Contract terms and strike outcomes are time-sensitive; this article does not present Hale’s 2024 comments as the current rule in 2026.

Hale said technology experts she had spoken with projected very high AI-driven unemployment, including estimates in the 30–40 percent range and a five-to-10-year timeline from one expert. The interview did not identify those experts or establish that their numbers represented a peer-reviewed consensus. They should therefore be understood as Hale’s account of warnings she heard, not as a verified forecast.
Conditional optimism
Hale’s outlook is anxious but not fatalistic. She sees AI as a tool rather than a moral actor: people and companies decide whether it expands human possibility or simply cuts labor costs. Her optimism depends on sharing technological gains with workers instead of discarding them for efficiency.

That principle runs through the whole conversation. The continuity of X-Men ’97, the under-recognized work Hale associates with Canada and her three conditions for synthetic voices all point to the same idea: innovation is valuable when the humans who create, perform and sustain it retain agency.
