The 2004 romantic comedy stars Garner as Jenna and Ruffalo as Matt, her childhood friend.
Two different reunions in 2024
The events were connected by the film, but they had different purposes. Garner’s February appearance celebrated Ruffalo’s career milestone; the April Zoom brought three cast members together to thank fans for the movie’s anniversary.
| Date | Event | Who took part | What it marked |
|---|---|---|---|
| February 8, 2024 | Ruffalo’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony | Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo | Garner paid tribute to her co-star as he received the honor. ABC News reported on the ceremony. |
| April 23, 2024 | Cast reunion over Zoom | Jennifer Garner, Mark Ruffalo, and Judy Greer | The actors thanked fans for the film’s 20th anniversary, as noted in Access Hollywood’s reunion video description. |
What Garner said at Ruffalo’s ceremony
Garner recalled Ruffalo nearly dropping out of 13 Going on 30 after the cast rehearsed its “Thriller” dance. She also joked, “I kicked off the Mark Ruffalo rom-com era!” ABC News reported that Garner said she wrote her speech in the car after being asked the night before. The outlet summarized her tribute by saying she described the pair as “lucky” to have starred in a movie that “still means something to people.”
Why the film’s 20th anniversary landed in 2024
13 Going on 30 was released in 2004. Its story follows 13-year-old Jenna, who magically wakes up in the body of her 30-year-old self, now a fashion editor at the fictional magazine Poise. Ruffalo plays Matt, Jenna’s childhood friend; Greer plays Lucy.

In a Vogue anniversary interview published April 19, 2024, Garner reflected on what gives the film its lasting appeal: “I’m not sure how much is just nostalgia of that time, or the kismet of me, Judy, Mark, and Gary being together, but there really is a golden halo around the entire experience.” She and Greer also discussed director Gary Winick’s contribution to the movie.
How the reunions fit the cast’s history
The April Zoom reunion was a chance for Garner, Ruffalo, and Greer to revisit a movie that remained meaningful to its audience two decades after release. Access Hollywood’s description also recalled the outlet’s earlier time on set with Garner and Ruffalo in Los Angeles and New York while the film was being made.
