Jennifer Ashton’s ex-husband, Rob (Dr. Robert) Ashton, died by suicide in February 2017. He was the father of their two children. In the years that followed, Jennifer Ashton spoke and wrote publicly about the family’s grief, seeking support, and her decision to address suicide loss. “Heartbroken” is not verified as her own wording, so it should not be treated as a direct quotation.
What happened to Jennifer Ashton’s ex-husband?
ABC News reported that Rob Ashton, also identified as Dr. Robert Ashton, died by suicide in February 2017. He and Jennifer Ashton had two children. ABC News’s 2022 video revisited the family’s experience, but the death it describes occurred in 2017—not in 2022. ABC News, April 24, 2019; ABC News, December 16, 2022.
The available reporting does not establish a definitive explanation for his death. It also does not support a claim that the divorce caused it.
How did Jennifer Ashton describe the family’s grief?
In a 2019 first-person ABC News article, Ashton wrote about feeling vulnerable as she shared her family’s experience. She said her children encouraged her to use her platform to speak to people affected by suicide loss. Her account emphasizes that grief unfolded over time and that seeking support was part of coping with the loss. ABC News, May 23, 2019.

In the same article, Ashton wrote: “I learned that grief is an expression of love, and that pain is a part of life, but suffering is optional.” This is her personal reflection, not clinical guidance or a promise that grief follows a particular course.
What did she share in Life After Suicide?
Ashton’s book, Life After Suicide: Finding Courage, Comfort & Community After Unthinkable Loss, offers a fuller account of her experience. An ABC News excerpt describes grief, guilt and fear, the search for support, and learning that grief can coexist with positive feelings. The questions she recalled asking herself are part of her account; they do not establish a cause of Rob’s death. ABC News, May 7, 2019.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the “Heartbroken” headline wording establish?
The available sources document Ashton’s public reflections on grief, but they do not verify “Heartbroken” as her exact words or identify the originating report for that phrasing. It is therefore more accurate to describe her as having spoken about the family’s loss than to present the word as a quotation. Nor should a story about the 2017 death be framed as new breaking news simply because a later video discussed it.
