Jellyfin now has an official app for Samsung devices running Tizen. However, the launch does not mean every Samsung TV can install it. Availability depends on the TV’s model year, Tizen version, firmware, country, and Samsung’s regional app-store distribution.
The app is a native client for connecting to your own Jellyfin Server. It is not a Netflix-style streaming service and does not provide a media catalogue by itself.
What launched?
Jellyfin has introduced an official Tizen client for Samsung Smart TVs and other compatible Samsung Tizen devices. The app connects the television to a Jellyfin Server running on a computer, NAS, mini PC, or other home-server hardware.

The server indexes your legally acquired media, manages users and metadata, and delivers video to the TV. Installing the Samsung app alone does not create a library or provide content.
Jellyfin lists the Tizen application in its official client catalogue. Samsung’s Italian app directory lists the app as version 1.1.0 and records an update dated December 22, 2025. Wider public reporting about the Samsung launch appeared in early February 2026, so there is no single confirmed worldwide launch timestamp.
Samsung’s regional app listing should not be treated as proof that the app is available in every country.

Which Samsung TVs support Jellyfin?
The safest description is that Jellyfin is available on supported Samsung Tizen devices. Contemporary reporting has identified 2021-and-newer Samsung TVs and Tizen 6.0-or-newer devices as the practical initial target. That is useful guidance, not a complete Samsung-certified compatibility matrix.
A newer TV can still fail to show Jellyfin because of its model family, firmware, country, or app-store approval. Open reports include cases involving recent U.S. Samsung models that could not find the application.

Therefore, the most reliable compatibility test is the Apps store on the specific TV. Do not assume that buying any new Samsung television guarantees access to Jellyfin.

How to install Jellyfin on a Samsung TV
- Connect the Samsung TV to the internet.
- Open Apps or the Samsung Smart TV app store. The exact label varies by model, firmware, language, and country.
- Search for Jellyfin.
- Check that the publisher is Jellyfin, then select Install.
- Launch the app and enter the address of your Jellyfin Server.
- Sign in with a Jellyfin user account created on that server.
If the TV shows the application, the store listing is a stronger compatibility signal than a generic model-year rule. You will still need a functioning server, a reachable server address, and network connectivity between the TV and server.
What you need before using the app
- A running Jellyfin Server.
- Media stored somewhere the server can access.
- A Jellyfin user account.
- A local network connection for in-home use, or correctly configured remote access.
- Working firewall, DNS, HTTPS, reverse-proxy, or VPN settings when connecting from outside the home.
Jellyfin software does not require a core subscription, but self-hosting is not cost-free in every case. Storage, electricity, server hardware, remote-access infrastructure, and optional hosting can all add expense.
Will your media play?
Having the native app does not guarantee that every file will play directly. The TV may support some combinations of containers, video codecs, audio codecs, and subtitles while requiring the server to transcode others.

Playback depends on the Samsung TV, the file, subtitles, network conditions, and the server’s CPU or GPU. Remote playback adds another layer of possible problems.

- Unsupported video or audio codecs.
- A container format the TV cannot handle.
- Subtitle formats that trigger transcoding.
- Insufficient server performance for real-time conversion.
- Reverse-proxy, HTTPS, firewall, VPN, or port-forwarding errors.
- Client bugs or server/client version mismatches.
Jellyfin’s Tizen issue tracker includes reports involving playback interruptions, sign-in failures, reverse-proxy playback, and other device-specific problems. These reports show possible failure modes, not a guarantee that every user will experience them.
Jellyfin versus Plex on Samsung TVs

Jellyfin is a strong fit for people who already run a home server and want an open-source alternative with control over users, metadata, libraries, and access. Plex is usually the easier choice for people who value broad device coverage and minimal maintenance.
Neither platform is automatically faster. Performance depends on whether the TV can direct-play the file, the server’s transcoding capability, subtitle handling, network quality, and whether playback is local or remote.

If Jellyfin does not appear in the Apps store
- Check the TV’s model year and Tizen version.
- Install all available Samsung firmware updates.
- Verify the Samsung account’s country or region.
- Search the exact name Jellyfin, rather than a broader term such as “media server.”
- Restart the TV and search again.
- Check whether Jellyfin appears on another Samsung device in the same region.
- Use an external Jellyfin-capable streaming device if the app remains unavailable.
Older guides may recommend installing a Tizen package manually. That is a separate, unofficial path and should not be confused with the official Samsung-store application.

- Test the same file in Jellyfin Web or a mobile Jellyfin client.
- Try a known-compatible H.264/AAC file.
- Temporarily disable subtitles.
- Check whether the server is direct-playing or transcoding.
- Review Jellyfin server logs for codec, permission, network, or transcoding errors.
- Test locally before troubleshooting remote access.
- Update the server and TV client where updates are available.
- If only the television fails, use an external client rather than rebuilding the entire server.
If local playback works but remote playback does not, investigate HTTPS certificates, DNS, reverse-proxy rules, VPN configuration, firewall settings, and routing separately. A successful home-network connection does not prove that remote access is configured correctly.
Options for older or unsupported Samsung TVs
Jellyfin’s official client catalogue includes applications for Android TV and Fire TV, Roku, Xbox, Android, iOS, and desktop platforms. An external streaming device can be the most dependable solution because its operating system, codec support, and app availability are independent of the TV’s Tizen generation.
Possible options include Fire TV, Google TV devices, Roku, or an Android TV device such as the NVIDIA Shield TV. The right choice depends on desired playback formats, remote-control preferences, price, and whether the device can direct-play your files.
Unofficial Tizen sideloading
The official Jellyfin Tizen repository documents a developer workflow requiring Tizen Studio 4.6 or newer, Git, Node.js 20 or newer, a Tizen certificate, Developer Mode on the TV, and a network connection between the development computer and television.

tizen install -n Jellyfin.wgt -t YOUR_TV_MODELCommunity tools such as Jellyfin2Samsung, now associated with Apps2Samsung, may simplify this process. They remain third-party tools, not the normal consumer installation route. Sideloading can introduce certificate expiration, developer-mode, update, and security problems, so an external streaming device is often less effort.
Who should choose Jellyfin?
Choose the native Jellyfin app when your Samsung TV displays it in the official store, you already operate a Jellyfin Server, and your library mostly direct-plays on the television.
Choose an external streaming device when the app is missing, the TV is older, subtitles or codecs regularly cause trouble, or you want a consistent client across several television brands.
Choose Plex when broad established device support, commercial polish, and simpler setup matter more than the control and self-hosting model of Jellyfin. For users who already have a capable server and prefer open-source software, Jellyfin’s Samsung client removes one important reason to buy another device—but only when the specific TV and region support it.
